Driving HD600s

There's a good possibility that these cans will be coming my way at christmas, so I was wondering how it would be best to drive them, if they come.

I currently have a Szekeres w/ gain. It can deafen me with my V6's at about half volume, but with only a gain of 5.5, would it be enough for the HD600s? I could up the gain, but then I'd get killed tring to listen to it w/ my V6s.

As another possibily, I could build a simple SS amp to use, perhaps just a regular Cmoy.

And finaly, I may be able to build a tube amp. The second week of december or so I will be going to help sort out and move all of my grandfather's old electronic parts. I already know there is a 4W/channel tube amp kit in there that he said I could have, but odds are there will be tons of tubes dating from 1940-80. Who knows what I'll find, this last option is very scetchy.

I'm fairly new to headphone HiFi myself, but I've found that my HD 600's can be driven to uncomfortable volume from any source I've got.
5 yr old pcdp, HP Laptop, TV in home office through DSP360, or any of the source components in my main system.
However, I bought a Total Airhead and it seems to clean up the sound from all but the best sources.

I wish I'd gotten a better amp, but my income has shrunk some since I became "semi-retired". working part-time is great, but it does a number on finances.

Oh well.

Please let us know!

I call "dibs" on any 12AX7's (or the like), EL84's (or the like), KT100's (or the like) and PCL805's (or the like)...though I doubt you'll find any of the latter...

No fair, Dusty. You have to share the EL84's with me.

you guys don't seem to realize. The tubes will probably be FOR HIM.

Yeah, but what he possibly want with KT100's or PCL805's? Capt.?

I plan to share the tubes with the members of my private club, unforunatly the only member of my private club is me, which is why it is called my private club.

Seriously though, what amp would work well, do tubes mate well with the 600s? You've been salivating over the possibility of tubes that you never awnsered my question!

As an endnote, I would like to point out that I don't even knwo what types of tubes there are, but when I find out you can bet I'll list them here to sort out the good from the bad.

LOL -- ouch! I asked for that though. Seriously -- does anyone actually honor a call of "dibs" anymore? Now that there's online advertising and eBay? More importantly, now that we're all adults?

(Resoundingly: ) Yes! (To self: don't say PCL805's) PCL805's sound amazingly good with my HD600's (Dummkopf! slaps self on head)

Maybe that's because...I suck? I did not answer your question because I did not feel qualified. But, I think the answer is as follows:

Yes.

Don't up the gain. I have both (headphones), and I don't change the knob much on my amp. I know that it is said that the HD600's require an amp, but that doesn't mean you need to turn it up more. I think it just needs the "power" (and I don't mean that in the technical sense, I mean that more in the audio voodoo sense). Maybe it has something to do with matching impedances, I dunno. I will listen to both on my amp tonight and confirm.

Thanks for that, and thanks for being understanding of my hunger for glass. It's a disease that I do not wish to cure.

Okay. Be that way. (Budgie crosses arms and looks petulant). A tube amp would be a nice match for the 600's. You could build your own MG Head (6BQ5,s and a 12AX7) or get Dusty to share a PCL805 schematic with ya. Some of the 6BQ5's sound fantastic , too. (I use RCA's in my amp, driven by an Amprex 12AX7)

This is funny, if you ask any SS DIYer about their opinion and they tell you:
yeh that's a great op-amp, Good luck and let us know the results, or I love that design, I know you will too.

Ask the tube crowd and you get: GIMME!

Thanks for your help and just maybe you'll get something for your trouble. Probably not, but there is a chance of a freak mail routing problem that I could take credit for.

Except that I don't have schematics for my RKV. I'm not a DIY guy. That's why I said I didn't think I was qualified (well, one of the reasons, anyway).

Confirmed. I found my self hardly turning the volume knob at all (mostly to reduce the brightness), so I think the gain is fine.
