Argh! Why? Why? WHY?!! [bangs head on desk repeatedly] I just don't get why these companies - by in large - continue not to offer gapless playback. Makes my choice of preferred DAPs very small. I've been waiting forever for my beloved Trekstor Vibez to come out with their flash based player but I've all but given up hope. I converted my iMod to flash based and absolutely love it but it needs to be mated with my Pico which decreases its ease of portability. I want to get a nice sized DAP that is flash based with at least 16gb, supports gapless playback and sounds good straight from the headphone out. Is that asking too much?! <- rhetorical question apparently.

Sony dropped Atrac/Sonicstage a couple of years ago (outside Japan), and with it went gapless, on-the-fly playlists, ratings, direct deletion from the player... and in came drag and drop, which is what the majority of people wanted, apparently. I still have my A808 model, so I have all those features, but 8GB isn't enough, so it spends most of its life in a speaker cradle.

As far as the new model is concerned, I have around 10 albums that need to stay gapless, so I'll just transfer them to the new model in WAV/PCM. It's not ideal, but at least it's an option.

I think NOW might be the time to sell my touch while it's new ( Just recently got a new one from BB's extended warranty), It seems overkill to have a touch and an x1000. I just hope the browser is better than the PSP, I know it won't be as good as safari, but as long as I can surf a little and check my mail and the weather I'm set.

Anyways I will probably order one from advanced and pay up front, so I get one first. I hope the exchange rate is decent at the time

Like zipping and unzipping, you make the files smaller by cleverly recoding patterns so that they take less space but without throwing away information.
And like zipping, the maximum apporachable compression rate seems to be 40-50 percent maximum, like FLAC, depending on the source.

im glad that my touch 2g will still be a highly sought after DAP when the sony comes out so really shouldnt be too much hassle selling one to get the other, although it would be nice to have two, no player is perfect and my touch is fantastic would be sad to see it go but that sony just seems to tick a few more boxes of what im after.

It was never available for pre-order. The price is just a place holder on google.

Because people demand and still buy non-gapless capable players. In the eye of these big companies, it's simple economics.

I don't think people demand no gapless, they just don't care, although I have seen some blog posts talking about how useless and AGGRAVATING gapless is on iTunes, and how to disable it... odd.

Oh yeah, also, the Sony is really great looking, based on the pictures. The first time I saw it I felt it looked odd, but it's really grown on me. I'm liking the size and weirdly textured surface. Unfortunately, it seems WAY too expensive. If I want a touch screen player, I'll probably go for the iPod touch, which will most likely fall in price next fall if a 64GB is introduced.
