I second this. my music sounds much clearer...sounds alot better than my X-fi too.

and no, I think the 5gen comes in black too, although could be mistaken

p.s. why the need for a 5.5gen oiver a 5th gen, they practically the same anyway aren't they?

barring screen and battery anyway
I've read that the 5.5 is thinner. so I figured this means it needs different parts, but I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking these silly questions

btw do you think guys that the 5.5gen is the best rockboxed over HP out from the ipods ?

not thinner, same dimensions, obviously the 60gig 5gen and 80gig 5.5 gen are same as both backplates allow for 240gb hdd mod.

same parts too interchangable pretty much. Ive replaced both my 5 gens with 5.5 gen screens and 950mah batteries.

and p.s. there's no such thing as a silly question.

so you say 5.5 gen has different screen?

what's the different between 5gen and 5.5gen than ?

brighter screen bigger capacity battery and search function in music folder apparently.

I needed to replace screen in both so I opted for the 5.5gen replacement screen otherwise I wouldn't bother swapping it out just cause its a bit brighter and I change the batteries to an upgraded capacity cameron sino as a matter of course when I buy second hand players.

Lets say you get a 5th gen and you wanted to replace the screen for a 5.5gen screen and a new battery, hell, even throw in a new headphone jack and hold switch assembly your looking at only circa £25 for the lot, screens can be had for less than ten quid free shipping brand new on ebay.

Rockbox now has a nice little program that automatically installs rockbox on your player. You just click install and it does all the work.

I see. well that sounds good.

and are these modifications hard to accomplish ? any specific tools or skill ?
i can see those green plastic tools that go together with the parts... are those all one need to pop up the ipod's shelf I presume ?

If your not going crazy while removing the ipod cover (following instructions ofc), you dont need to worry about breaking it

I just installed Rockbox on my 5.5g ipod video (80gb). I am still learning how to use it, but I have a few preliminary observations.

First, this is very much worth learning how to use. Like some others posted, the sound is better. Hiss is way down, and the fidelity is way up. In fact, the audio resolution is quite remarkable. Similar to my Sansa clip now. I had heard so many people rave about the Wolfson DAC in the unit, but never understood why. Now I know. I have never been tempted to post about the high fidelity of this unit before; temptation lies before me.

Second, I am glad there is a dual boot capability. It appears that the unit does not play apple format video. Must be too proprietary. It seems to play mpeg 1 and 2 according to the manual...but I gather it does not play xvid? I am still monkeying around...but so far no video output yet.

Third, I have figured out how to sort music by artist and album...but it is a bummer that I can't import itunes playlists (at least as far as I can tell). So playlist management is next for me. Unless somebody has some special pointers there.
