Monitor phones

Looking for some phones to use for mixing. I'm using pro tools on my MacBook pro.

The obvious standard for these seems to be the Sony mdr-v6. Can I get something better for around $100?

I had the Senn 280's in mind, I like that they are fully closed.

Whats the deal with the k-240s... they are semi open? how will this be in a dorm room situation. I need to be able to use them with others watching tv/listening to music around me.

I would recommend the Equation RP-21 over the k240's any day...I've never tried the new MKII's however. The old 240S's have a big wide bump in the upper bass that makes them very unsuitable for mixing, IMO. You really lose a lot of detail with those compared to my other headphones. The Equations are more detailed and far more balanced. The v-6's are the opposite of the k240's. They are overly bright, very detailed, and have a dip in the upper bass frequencies....but many musicians find them suitable for studio use. Best sub $100 studio headphone, IMO, is the RP-21.

exactly. For 100 bucks, the 280 pro's are flat, as detailed as good speakers, and sealed with great ambient attenuation. Although, be mindful that mixes on headphones dont translate well to speakers...but for casual mixing it's a lot cheaper than treating a room ;-)

complete reading is always a bit of an issue it seems

HD 280 Pro should do the trick, excellent isolation and fairly honest reproduction for mixing, however the weaklink here is going to be the shoddy integrated audio on your Mac (although, if you're using ProTools, you've got some form of Digidesign or M-Audio hardware about, it should have an hp out)
