A problem with that CKイIII BOM however, the part for VR1 is listed as "obsolete" on Mouser. I think I found 512-MC7815ECT as an alternative for it, but I don't know if it will be compatible.

Jeff is on vacation still I believe, I emailed him a couple days ago regarding my alien dac. He told me he was on vacation but still managed to answer my emails!

chiefroastbeef - any particular reason you're going with the alien? I was thinking about a DAC but was torn between that and the Bantam.

I went with the Alien, and it works nicely! I went with the alien because Jeff offered the kit, I didn't feel like sourcing the parts because I didn't feel comfortable doing so. I must say though after two diy projects under my belt, I'll probably source the parts for my next project.

You can't go wrong with the alien, I like mine a lot!

OnePlusTwo, The Beta22 is considered by many as the ultimate headphone amplifier, at least in the Solid State realm. It should be a major step up from the CK2III. Also, it can be configured as a 2 channel, 3 channel active ground or fully balanced (4 amplifiers), making it very versatile (and the fact that it AMB designed it to be built that way from the beginning.)

I don't know if anyone has done it, but an option after building a CK2III, would be to build a second one, and use them both in a Balanced configuration (Of course you would have to rewire your headphones for Balanced operation).

I read the three different configurations and don't really get what the difference is in terms of the sound. Are we talking about a small difference in sound with a relatively significant increase in cost? I'm thinking that I would either build the 2 or 3 board ones. And maybe the S22? Is there a walwart out there that would be good enough? Might be fun to build anyway, it's just not cheap. Apologize if these are naive questions...

M3 and CK ii

I have built both.
The CKII with chep parts found in Brazil (except from the board) and de M3 with "boutique" parts from Elna Sillmic II caps to mil spec resistors on amp and power supplly(sigma11).
The CkII is like a "non existing" between the source and fones.. No color, no irterference, zero noise, high detail , high powers. I can say it´s absolutely clean

The M3 in other hand is a very detailed sound with a wonderful tone and unique...
Don´t know wich is better.. they are completly different to my ears.

I listen do my CK at work like 4 hours a day...
I can´t listes to M3 for this time BUT.... If I stop to just listen to the music at home for pleasure and thinking it´s my favorite

Try

863-MC7915CTG
and
863-MC7815CTG

There is a preloaded parts list at Mouser but I have not checked it in over a year and the password was made public so...

Well, I decided to take the plunge and go for the Beta and Sigma 22. I figured go big or go home! Hopefully I don't regret it later on. However, in the meantime, I'm also going to build a mini3 amp and gamma1 DAC to just get a little more experience under my belt at a relatively low cost. This electronics DIY thing is seriously addictive.

The one thing I'm worried about for the beta and sigma is the potential case costs. Anyone have any examples or ideas of how to do this cheaply but safely/reliably? I was staring at my Sennheiser 650 box the other day and thought the amp would fit perfectly in there! Maybe that's a bit too chintzy... Any other ideas for what can be repurposed as an enclosure for either the amp or the PSU?

Folks - Just thought I'd close out this thread with what I ended up doing.

1. I built a gamma 1 which worked perfectly from the get go.
2. I built a mini 3 but haven't gotten it working yet because I got distracted by...
3. My sigma and beta 22 build:

EDIT: I got my mini3 working. Not sure what happened, I just reflowed some of the joints and it started working.

That beta 22 is BAD ASS! Working on a Millet Minimax right now. Might sell it to start a beta 22 in a few months.

Thanks Macdru! I'm really happy with it. I actually expanded on the cookie tin theme a bit when I moved the trafo out of the first enclosure. Check out my sig for the revision.

I'm trying to decide if I want to sell my minimax or not. It's such a cool little amp. Plus, if I sell it, I won't have a tube amp. I figure I'll wait another month or two and see if I ever listen to it or if I'll just listen to the beta.
