AKG k601 repair

Hey all.

So yesterday, the left channel of my k601 failed. It came back for a second, but the moment I adjusted the cans, the line dropped out. Will it be a safe assumption that there's a loose wire in there ?

I did a resistance test on the actual jack, and measures 118 ohm between ground and the right channel, but something in the megaohms on the left.

These things easy to repair ? Anyone else have a similar problem ? I'm assuming they're out of warranty (should probably double check that though ...).

Yes, pretty safe to assume a broken wire. Hopefully not in the voice coil, but it should be pretty easy to diagnose and hopefully repair. If the K601 is anything like the K701 though, opening it up and working on it isnt much fun.

*shudders*

Thanks ! I'll start searching through the "opening up my friggin' akg" threads !

To open them, going from memory, you put something in the metal grill behind the driver, twist it to remove, take out a couple screws, and keep going as makes sense. Its just how the wires are soldered really that makes it annoying. Which channel went out, the one with the cable going into it, or the other one?

The one going in, left channel.

I'm sure it'll just be the signal wire, cause if the ground came loose, then both channels will be gone. Just hope there's enough slack for a good connection.

I'm 99% sure that's internal wire - pretty unstable construction there. Since the wires soldered to the moving cup, they are always in motion, so they're wearing and tearing overtime. Pretty bad construction by AKG there... Luckily, it's easy to repair...

Grab the service manual from AKG. They're not so hard to open up and recable.

Well I managed to fix them over the weekend

Opening the suckers is a bit of a pain, but keeping them still while soldering those fragile little wires is annoying ! Why man hasn't evolved a third arm, I dunno ...

Hey, I've had identical issues.  Tried to open them up using this service manual and am having difficulty - I get confused about how to remove the grille "24."  It says something about using tweezers that doesn't make much sense.  Any help would be appreciated.

I just took a chance and scored a pair of K601s on the basis of this thread. The left channel is out. Price was very reasonable, considering that you can’t buy a new pair for less than about $200. I gambled I could figure out how to fix it.

Turns out that it’s not a broken internal wire. The cable is defective. If I wiggle the attachment end of it, the channel clicks in and out. I can hold it in place and both channels are clear. I suspect this set is a number of years old, since the serial number in the low 4 digits and I’ve seen 5-digit #s for the K601. It’s just a wear and tear problem. I had the exact same problem with a pair of K240DFs I used to own.

Opening the grill piece #24 is the easy part. I found I didn’t need tweezers. I just stuck the sharp end of a simple compass in one of the outer holes and managed to move the bayonet-mounted piece pretty easily. It popped right off.

The next step is the hard part, a yet-unsolved mystery. The Service Manual tells you how to do it but it’s difficult to grip lid 23 hard enough to expose both latches. I don’t want to force it with pliers. Tricks, anyone?

If a K601 or K701 ever is in my hands again, I fully intend to make a video showing how to disassemble them, but since I first said that I haven't had any come to me for servicing yet.

Most of the grilles are on too tight to just pop off, they require a distressing amount of force. Yours might have been opened before?

I don't remember... does the K601 also have a notch on the side by one of the tabs on part 23 that lets you use a small screwdriver to push it loose? Generally though, that part is largely about feel and can be a bit difficult if you don't want to use anything that might mark up the plastic, especially if you've never done it before. Doesn't help that the plastic is a bit stiffer on the K601/K701 than the older models, and is harder to flex it enough to come free.

Thanks Fitz. There is no such slot. Since this discussion is now about cable replacement, let's shift  to cello's thread ......http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/514676/replacing-the-cable-on-an-akg-k601#post_7032823
