The HD2 is similar to ZDT except for the lack of input transformers on the ZDT, but I already have a Jensen Transformers XLR > RCA input transformer box.
Hmmm there are even Transformer options for the BA??? Which ones? What is better/best? I have asked for the pss option for my BA .. would be good to get a review posted on here soon??

Sorry, that was the continuation of a talk about my EC ZDT amp.

I think its always negotiable.. but right now the best output transformer option seems to be the partial silver core electraprints. If you want to talk to him about tango/tamura or something really esoteric I'm sure he can rap with you about it.. but i'd suggest waiting until the first batch of BAs are out since he seems pretty antsy to get them out and may not hav ethe patience to discuss custom stuff.

The first run of Balancing Acts are now in the final stages of production and are being shipped! The second run will begin in September in limited quantity. Orders are now being taken. The Balancing Act offers several options to buyers. To place your order, contact cuthus@charter.net.

Just got my modded Wadia back today too. Please God.

I have the Woo WA5-LE which is very good but I am also looking at the BA.

I have some general questions:-

Why did you chose the BA? Is it solely because it’s a balanced amp?

How does it sound compared to the Zana Deux or ZDT?

I am looking at the 300B output tube option because there’s a good choice of brands - would the AD1 or 307A be better?

Stock or upgraded output transformers?

Does anyone know if November is still the expected shipping date for the 2nd run?

That's what I last heard from Craig a couple of weeks ago. I've bitten the bullet & put myself down for the next run. I'm going for upgraded attenuator and silver transformers. It's only money after all, isn't it? I'd be interested to know people's thoughts on the relative merits of the different tube options, bearing in mind this will be feeding HD800s. Cheers.

I'm thinking about the stepped attenuator option hopefully 48 steps will be enough for fine volume control at low volumes
post #129 of 1418
Just so people are up to date, the attenuator sample is heading over to Craig now so he should have listened to it next week. So if you're getting the attenuator in the first batch, you're most likely looking at atleast two weeks.

Edit:Actually just heard back from Craig. The BA's are pretty much finished and he's just waiting for the shipping containers. The attenuators take three weeks for delievery so if you want one on this batch then most likely another month. The second batch probably won't run into this problem.

I choose the BA because I heard the Nautilus (Prototype of the ZDT) and thought it was the best sounding tube amp I've ever heard bar none and was assured the BA would be better.. the 3rd (Or 4th?) to final prototype I shot out against the Nautilus and it was indeed better to my ears so i went with it. Plus to my knowledge outside of DIY really only Craig's tube amps have a value/price ratio that is appealing to me while being top tier. Moreover, his craftsmanship/attention to detail is a notch up on what most DIYers can offer. (Frank Cooter and various other DIYers obviously aren't shabby themselves ;p).

How does it sound compared to the Zana Deux or ZDT?

The last incarnation I heard it was more resolving/airier and cleaner than the Zana Deux and airier/cleaner than the Nautilus. I don't know against the ZDT nor do I know how the last few updates have improved things. foo_me who has heard it in its near-final form says they make a huge difference.. we'll see soon enough I'm guessing that the BA in the end can be considered slightly better though it could fall down to preferences and if you want the speaker outs or not. The ZDT is a phenomenal bargain at the price which is a good amount cheaper. Definitely do not disregard it, but a baller like you Rob N? Do both I'm tempted to...

I am looking at the 300B output tube option because there’s a good choice of brands - would the AD1 or 307A be better?

Well the AD1 is a kind of a legendary tube so I was immediately attracted to that. I feel like 307A and AD1 will be the best sounding of the bunch... So it really falls down to.. can you horde enough 307As which are cheaper and more available NOS (Though the supply is fast dwindling and there are many other hoarders)... or do you want the surety of in production AD1s from EML (A quality but expensive outfit) and hunt for the German NOS tubes...

Another interesting thought was that Craig felt the AD1 tube might shine finer in the ZDT circuit since it's power is not being used to its full potential in the BA circuit... he suggested to me to get the BA 307A and get a custom ZDT with AD1 tubes.. sadly I can't rock that right now so I am sticking with what I have.

Stock or upgraded output transformers?

Partial Silver is supposed to be a game changer at least in the 6FG8/AD1 combination.. it seems like for the money (Not that much) it's well worth it. I'd be interested in seeing what things would be like with some Tamura/Tango transformers or something even more Esoteric but.. no hurry. It is supposed to be very easy to swap transformers so I can always roll in the future.

Craig says choose the 300B for K1000. He also said the upgraded PSU in the ZDT improved it noticeably over the Nautilus. I am thrilled with mine, although since I am not using the speaker out as much as I anticipated I wonder if I should have gone with the BA/300B.
Just get one of those, too, Larry. Head-to-Head!
Thanks for the info

I have been looking more towards the 307A
I have looked at the ZDT,can't do both at this time though!
I would love to do a head-to-head of the BA vs. the TTVJ 307A. Talk about a heavyweight fight.
Yeah it's not really a contest for me. I haven't done like a long listening session side by side but I've done back and forth at meets.. probably not enough for most people, but enough to clinch it for me
