Sony EX700 Owners - Gel Tips vs. Comply T-400 Tips - Please Help Out IE8 Owners

Sorry to start another thread on tips. I was contemplating just adding on to another thread, but thought the people I wanted to read this wouldn't. Then I thought of PMing EX700 owners, but then thought all IE8 users might benefit, so here it goes:

Supposedly the Sony EX700 gel tips will fit the IE8. For me, none of the tips supplied with the IE8 give me a seal, as they don't protrude deep enough into my ear. I must have large ear openings, and the large body of the IE8 prevents deeper tip insertion.

I am using Comply tips, and here are pictures of how they compare with the included tips: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/5369916-post7.html

The Sony tips are $40+, and I figure I will spend that much on Complys in a year, give or take. I am looking at the large tips found here, item #327525601. I don't want to spend the money on the Sony tips unless I am fairly confident they will give me a seal.

My questions:
- How do the Sony EX700 gel tips compare size wise to the Comply T-400 tips?
- Can anyone post pictures?
- How large is the opening compared to the T-400 (as I need them to sit out a little on the IE8 nozzle)?

Thank you in advance

i think we need to do a mass protest to sennheiser, they give like 4 million tips but yet still so many people not getting a good fit with any of them.

i think they just forgot that due to the shape of them they cant actually get pushed into the ear canal properly, did they not test the tips for fit before they went on sale?

average_joe, how can you/we tell which tip corresponds with which size on the site you linked (here)?

By the way, how are you getting $40+ as your figure? Is that bringing more than 1 pair into the mix? While it's still far too much for a single pair of tips, I'm seeing a hair under $35 shipped from that site.

EDIT: I'm also a bit confused as to why you call them "gel tips"...From what I've read about them, these "hybrid silicone earbuds" (as per Sony's lingo) are simply the usual silicone material with a firmer silicone tube inserted along the stem. Anyway, I take it you're more interested in their height than the exact material they're made of, no?

I have seen Sony and HMV selling them here for £5 (three sizes per pair), but I am not sure if it is specific for the EX700 or is the more generic version for all their in-ear headphones.

Are they the newer ones with the colored material along the inside? My guess is that, given the Sony site's much higher pricing and the fact that they only seem to sell them individually, the ones you've seen in stores are the regular old silicone tips that have been around for years.

I think the tips you're referring to are the EP-EX10 (NOT EX1). It's strange that Sony charges so much here, since they're readily available in Japan for around $6 for two pairs.

I found a few pics online, but I'm not sure if they'll help.

(Sizes from left to right: SS, S, M, and L)

Edit: Actually, I'm pretty sure that these tips come with the EX300 and EX500 as well. Does anybody have these for comparison?

It is probably for the old one. I didn't remember seeing any coloured stuff in the inside. I'll have another look tomorrow. $40 is just too much to pay for tips.

Anyway is this fit problem only for the IE 8 or are people getting affected by the IE 7 as well?

Interesting, kjk1281. My impression is that the OP is looking for the taller LL ones that appear to have been introduced especially for the MDR-EX700 (see Sony's comparison pics below). As far as I can tell, the MDR-EX700 is the only model which includes all 7 sizes of the newer hybrid silicones -- other earphones, like the MDR-EX35, come with a smaller selection. Do you know if the LL-sized model of EX10 tip is also sold in packs like that?

D'oh, I completely forgot about all those in-between/extra sizes. Thanks for pointing that out.

When I was last in Japan, the only sizes that I saw were the S, M, and L. The SS was nowhere to found, and even the L wasn't available everywhere. As far as I know, the four sizes that appear in that one pic are the only sizes made available.

I'm starting to wonder if the color of the center of the tips somehow corresponds to their size. From the pic, it appears that the SS is pink, S is orange, and M is a greenish blue. I can't really tell what the L is...

I agree...I should send my comply and Sony tip receipts to Sennheiser for reimbursement!

I called and asked which tip I should order. Maybe I need to change my handle to large_ear_canal_joe

OK, not quite $40 (I forgot the exact price) $13.95 x2 plus tax ($2.16) and shipping ($6.95) = $37 bucks, still, close to $40

Again, maybe I am confused as I have been crazy busy with business as usual and my new obsession, comparing the PFE and IE8. I guess the Klipsch tips are gel, and these are hybrid silicon? I just remember reading the Sony tips are super comfortable.

kjk1281 and epithetless, thanks for the posts, that really helps me...I guess I need the LL. But from the pic showing all the tips, I am not sure if they will protrude deep enough. My complys don't go all the way down the nozzle...

And the color does correspond to the size...light blue is large.

Klipsch gels are super comfy. Can't live without mine. But I am willing to try out these new Sony tips if they can provide more isolation while retaining the comfort level the Klipsch provides, if they fit.

Aren't the Klipsh gels the same size as the Comply T-100s? If so, I don't think they will fit the IE8, which uses the T-400, and the opening is much bigger.

The Klipsch will probably work on the Phonak Audeo PFE though.

Yeah they are the same as the T-100. Darn, as I wanted to try the new Sony tips. I'll probably try to get some for my CX 95 (which is the same size as the T-400) if they have some here...

If you end up finding them, let us know what you think.
