Just as I said guns may be over-rated, danger from bears is over-rated. As I said, most animals (bears + sweets, that's another matter) are only too happy to leave you the hell alone, bears included. Anyway, with the proper ammo, a twenty-gauge can handle most bears, though I'd prefer a twelve-gauge pump.

Mostly they are safe but you never know so I advocate protection of some kind. Every year there are a few bear attacks up here in Western Canada. Last year a bear walked onto a guys fishing boat and attacked him, another woman was mauled right in her yard in Port Coquitlam, which is almost a part of Greater Vancouver. Bears can be a problem so don't underestimate them. I would at least carry bear spray and wear a bell on your belt.
