PFE v. X10

Now that I've had a chance to sit with my new X10s and PFEs for several hours, I thought I'd throw my opinion into the hat. I've been switching between these and my MS-1s, sourced from a full-size CD player running through a MINT amp. I've not spent much time with either un-amped.

The PFEs do not have the bass impact that the X10s do. I think that's well established. The X10s definitely have the upper-mid recess that I've read about. The PFEs, especially with the grey filters, sound much more even. Female vocals and acoustic guitar are much better in the PFEs. It's actually a little disappointing going back to the X10s during songs with strong vocals. In classical, however, the weakness is not as noticeable. The bass in the PFEs is very good though. It seems almost as tight and clean.
The microphonics of the X10s can be pretty bad. I suspect that the over-the-ear style of the PFEs helps in that concern. I am also probably just accustomed to my Shures going over the ear, leading to a preference for that style.

In the long run, except when I'm looking for that extra bass or when listening to classical, I think that I'll find myself going to the PFEs more often. Which is a shame because the wife absolutely loves them. Phonak website, here I come again.

X2 when I did my X10 v. PFE listen. In fact, exactly how I heard them.

While I've not looked hard or for a while, I've not heard of them selling for less.

What I have heard is a very small handful of people having problems with them and having much less trouble exchanging them with the manufacturer than some other reseller.

yes, for U.S. and Canadian customers. Save10 expires 2/15, or so they say.

Can't remember who posted it, but I want to thank them for suggested the large Comply T130s for the PFEs. The Phonaks come with one pair of what must be medium T130s, but the larges, as HPAddict noted, are not really large, they are just a little thicker, provided an even better seal for me, which in turn adds to the enjoyment. The medium T130s are good too, but I always felt they were a little loose (right word?) and leaked some sound. Not the T130 large. Wow, with the Touch 2G, even unamped the PFEs really amaze. Oh, and I am back to the gray filters (I ordered an 8-pack of each). I also use the Touch bass booster EQ (I know, I know, the iPOD EQ sux), which really isn't bad on some tracks (but distorts on hip-hop or other heavy bass genres). Haven't even tried any amps yet with these new tips.

That was probably me - I ordered the large and posted that they fit better and are closer to what a medium should be. I think the large Complys with grey filters are a good match, and haven't gone back yet. Sometimes the silicone tips and grey filters are too bright or occasionally sibilant with the 4G Nano. The clarity beats the black filters with silicone tips.

Agree, best tips, by far. Thanks for that. Not sure everyone would need them, but it's not like they create too much pressure or anything. I guess if you have very small ear canals, the stock ones are fine.
