very different sounding, the eterna has warm and fun sounding while the pfe you know sound analytical/bright with grey filter (since i use mostly with grey filter).

I've read people saying that the PFE's pretty much can't be beat for critical listening. Is this still somewhat true? I've always loved their sound/instrument seperation. I could always pick out different things going on in songs faster than any other iem I have and focus on it... simply amazing for a single BA...

UM3Xs easily beat them hands down.

Such an astute observation...at 3x the price, I should hope so!

And yet some people here preferred the PFEs

Now i really wonder how the DBAs compare for critical listening.

I do not agree at all.  IMHO the PFE has better treble extension, more clarity in the mids, and better quality bass, just with less bass quantity than the UM3X.

IMHO the PFE is more accurate than the UM3X.

^ Wow, guess we have different tastes then.

one having better treble extension and all of that isn't exactly different taste :P

When I meant taste I didn't mean the aspects of treble extension and whatnot.... I was referring to the overall sound. I personally like the UM3Xs a lot more than the PFEs. Obviously everyone isn't going to agree with me but I feel that they are better; I guess I just like IEMs that sound fuller.

The PFEs do have some amazing detail though; I give them that. Those IEMs themselves got me into classical music. I just like the way the 3Xs reproduce that classical music more.

Yep, different tastes for sure.  The UM3X wasn't my cup of tea.

I do agree with you that the PFE can definitely have a bit of a thin sound.  I'm actually waiting for somebody (Audeo!) to release a PFE with a little more weight at the bottom end.  But it seems nothing has come up just yet.  Until then, EQ it is!

*shakes hands* To each their own :) But yea EQ did a lot for me when I used them. For me, I got the best results (and more convenient) if I kept it on the gray filters for detail oriented music and just switched to black filters and EQed the treble a bit for the bass oriented music.

But yea again, I agree with your original statement for the PFEs detail/treble extension. I guess I just love the slightly forward mids that the 3Xs bring to the table; hence my description of a "fuller" sound.

Sorry, I don't have the time to read through 141 pages so i was wondering if you could give me some short answers:

How does Phonak's Audeo PFE perform without an amp?

I want to use it for the iPhone 3GS. Will they match?

Thanks.

They performed the same to my ears when i was amping them with a Headsix through a line out. If people feel reassured with an amp good for them, but you don't need one with the PFEs.

did the new filter already on sale?

That's exactly what the new Phonak Audeo PFE 012 and 022 offer.  Phonak have developed a new bass (green) filter that adds more weight to the bottom end.  See the following link:

In my opinion this filter gives the PFE a much better balanced sound.  There is some loss of midrange detail with the new green filter, but it's slight and the extra warmth and punch at the bottom is very welcome (I'm no bass monster).
