Quad makes some great sounding speakers for the $. Very relaxed British sound signature with great detail!!! Worth a look. Paradigms are way too bright IMO.

Get some used studio monitors - there's loads to choose from. There was a guy on the local Craigslist selling a pair of Event PS5s for $100. The original KRK RokIts are quite inexpensive, and come highly recommended; if they're anything like my KRK 6000 studio monitors from the 80s, they should be very well made and last a long, long time.

If you don't want to buy used, Alesis, Samson, and a few other companies do nice monitors for the dollar.

Bright generally means flat.

Flat is good.
