Yeah, there were some pretty bad early USB DACs, you're right. Fortunately the ones I have heard lately are pretty good.

I knwo this is an old thread, but I have been having a good look at this amp as well as the Ming Da, as a result of your review summary. I like the added functiuonality of the pre outs, as I can run them into my Burson PI-160 as a power amp, but I don't need the USB dac

However, my main concern is the headphone output. If the pricing was similar, how much difference is there between the Ming Da and the Sweet 5? With some good tube rolling, could they be on a par?

I can't really quantify it, but I did feel the Ming-Da sounded a little better. Not hugely. If you need preamp outs, this might work best.
