So I've just been listening to some music I "came across" on the internet, and there was a few turkish songs in the album. I really liked the hand symbols and plucking instruments. Anybody have any good bands/groups/whatever they call themselves?

What sort of Turkish music you have came across.do you have the name of the artist.or if you tell me about the style I may help you. They call themselves band or groups as yours does by the way.no difference...

If you're looking for a contemporary Turkish mix, you might try this compilation:

I'm not looking for contemporary at all. I'm looking for like hand symbols(sp?), maybe some vocals, instruments. No current stuff like pop or whatever please. I have no idea what the name of the group/band or song was.

I would like some recommendations also on middle eastern music with a lot of, if not mostly, rythmic percussion...? TIA

Somewhat related ... for a while I was hooked on "bollywood" music, but every time I listened I had to go out for curry.

I'm not even sure what Turkish music sounds like. All I have for reference is that gypsy scene in "From Russia With Love"

Try Kardeş Türküler, a group of younger people paying careful attention to older traditions. Lots of their material on Youtube to check out, and any of their albums are worth listening to - try Hemavaz for example.

Looking through what I have, I tend to prefer the softer folkier Anatolian style it seems, and you might try artists like Cengiz Özkan (try the album Gelin), Erkan Oğur (Fuad is cool) or Musa Eroğlu (anything by him, but Sele Verdim is good).

Definitely get Kardeş Türküler however - sounds exactly as you described.

Onurrus - I see you are in Istanbul (greatest city on the planet)! Give us more suggestions please - I have a great love of this kind of music, and would love some solid recommendations.

Have you heard Peter Gabriel's "Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack? That uses a lot of middle eastern music which is similar to Turkish music.

Hi Zumaro I see youa re interested in folkloric music,In that style."Grup cığ" can be nice if you like Kardes Turkuler,

Gulun kokusu vardı by Erkan ogur is cool(anything by him is cool I think),

Huseyin turan has a very good vocal and style.you can look for his cds especially "turna sesi"

Also Gulay is a good female vocal and anything by her can make you happy.

If you want to hear a baglama virtuoso you can go for Arif Sağ and Erdal Erzincan.

I am glad you like Istanbul that much,Its one of the best places on earth!
