Very slow transfer speeds with Sony S639

I just bought a new Sony S639 and everything about it is amazing except the time it takes to transfer song on the player. It takes about 4 to 5 times more time to transfer songs on that player than my very old iPod 4th 20Gb (the one with a monochrome screen).

Is this normal for flash player? What can I do?

You can get faster transfer time if you switch it to UMS mode.

On Windows XP (Vista should be similar):

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

Find the Walkman on the device manager then choose 'Update driver'. Select 'no, not this time', then install from a list (advanced). Choose 'Don't search', then you will be presented with a list where you can choose between MTP and USB Mass Storage device.

Ok now the Sony player doesn't show (MTP) on the display, and on windows explorer (I'm using Vista) it shows like a regular USB Drive. However, the transfer is still slow, 2.22 MB/sec. I tried transfering the same data on my iPod and it's 14 MB/sec.

Also, when there is no activity, the display on the Sony shows "Connecting" and when I'm transfering data it says "Do not disconnect" like the iPod.

What else can try? Thanks for the help!

Is there a drive letter on Windows explorer? If it doesn't then it is connected in MTP mode.

Yes there is a drive letter. Is there an updated firmware? My device says 1.10.

Is a flash player slower to transfer data with USB2?

In my experience USB flash is usually slower to transfer compared to external harddrives, but nothing that annoys me actually.

Maybe cause I am so used to it... (never owned a harddrive based DAP)

Anyone can do tests with their S639 to see how fast they can transfer data onto their player? I really bugs me that I can only go at 2.22MB/sec when my +4 years old iPod transfers at 15MB/sec.

Okay, I did a quick test comparing my S639, a Samsung YP-U1 (2GB) and a 2GB Sandisk microSD card (via my notebook's built-in SD card reader). In each cases I dragged and dropped a folder filled with 100MB of varying file sizes (from 1KB to 11MB). PC is a ThinkPad X61 with 1.8Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM running Windows XP SP3.

Samsung (UMS mode): 87 seconds

Sony (UMS mode): 46 seconds

Sony (MTP mode): 58 seconds

microSD: 28 seconds

As I said before hand, USB flash memories are pretty slow compared to harddrives, unless they are designed specifically for speed (like high speed memory cards aimed at D-SLR or SSDs). A general rule is the smaller the file size, the lower the average write speed will be.

There is a firmware 1.11 release for NWZ-S638F/S639F European players. I suspect I'm imagining things but file transfer seemed faster after I updated mine. I never timed it on the original firmware so I have nothing factual to base that on whatsover

Mine is very fast. I just drag and drop the file onto the player and it's pretty much instant (one or two seconds an album).

My firmware is the latest version, by the way.

don't forget that UMS mode won't work for Iplayer stuff DRM

I had similar experiences with my A816 with drag and drop file transfers. Then I tried using media players to transfer the content. Winamp worked nicely by improving the transfer speed and it handles album art well too.

Using a media manager app (I am using MediaMonkey) does seem to speed the transfer up somewhat.

1 or 2 second an album? I'm more at 3 second per song! I'll try the latest firmware, and try using winamp or media player to transfer.
