X2..
I was quite surprise to see that HD280 driver that has "HD555/595" written on it..
It's different from my HD555's drivers..

this is the close-up snapshot from the left driver of my HD555:

do they sound the same with same internal structure after the change?

The driver 555 and 595 are the same, the code is 512806. The 600's and 650 are different though.

I think they use the same drivers
Sennheiser has just employed the strategy called "price descrimination" to maximize the profit. it has been explained in economics textbooks.

I just tried removing the rubber in my 555's but I didn't like the way they sounded without it. Placement of sounds were less accurate for me but I always run with dolby headphone on so that might have something to do with it.

necro?  I just did this, removing the foam pads inside my 555s definitely made the synths in siobhan donaghy's 'Medivac' sharper/clearer and more 'stranded' and bass* is a tad tighter or less 'stuffified', seems deeper too (the bass loops on halcyon days go deeper than i recall). *i'm looking for differences here, i could be imagining it!  Also in taking them apart i really quite admire the build quality for the price I paid.

Thanks for the thread.

Guys, I hate to advertise my threads here.  But I see people are still linking to the very poor mods for the 555.  Most of the threads here just have pictures and how it sounds with the new mods.  If you need help on actually doing it, check out my threads.  I spent so much time and effort into creating the instructions that I don't feel their getting their worth.  It kinda makes me not want to do them anymore.  I think I did more than enough on how to do these 2 mods, that no one even came close with their before/after pictures and how it sounds with it done.  Anyways, here are the links if you want to find out:

OK I might have this one sussed out somewhat. I used to own a piar of 595's but they got stolen from me :( Anyway, I then went out and bought and pair of 555's cus I was a little short on cash for the 595's at the time and when I got them out of the box I noticed that the 555's were ever so slightly lighter (in weight) than what I remembered the 595's to be. I then saw this forum thread and decided to see if i can find the overall product weight of the two. Sure enough, according to Moneysupermarket.com the 595's weigh in at 270g and the 555's are 260g (10 grams less even with the two foam pads inside). Now, either this weight different is caused by a slight difference in driver size/ weight (meaning it's a different driver) or the overall build uses different materials in some way. I'm more inclined to say it's a different driver as from hearing them both I can honestly say that I was a lot more impressed with the sound of the 595's for the same reasons which have already been mentioned time and time again by all of you lot earlier in this thread. I suppose all that is left to do now is remove the foam pads inside my 555's and decide for myself what I think sounds better. Although, I think we all know the answer to that one really don't we? Open all the way!!!

different headband material :)

Exactly. Different headband design would account for that slight variation. The drivers are definitely, absolutely, once-and-for-all the same.

Has anyone tested the frequency responses of a modded HD555 and HD595? I am keep hearing that the driver are the same, and the quality of HD555 improves after removing the foam. But those are subjective claims, can someone with the necessary equipment test the two frequency responses? If the difference is much smaller than on paper 15-28,000 Hz for HD555 12-38,500 Hz for HD595. Then we can finally safely conclude HD555=HD595 once for all, if not, it's still just speculation.

Thanks!

Sigh ...  Not subjective.  Fact:

You can't argue with that.

I am conviced. And as a result I have accidentally saved myself a fair bit of money by buying the 555's and modifying them smily_headphones1.gif

By the way... Where can I buy the drivers on their own?

Just for future reference.

Hi there, I've just joined to +1 this question.

I have to replace a driver in my 595. Well... With a driver from a 555 possibly it seems!. Is the driver assembly the same also then?.

Actually, after a quick part number google I've found the left driver unit for £31.40, that seems very cheap. I was quoted £60something not so long back by a lady at sennheiser. Hmmm. (Edit: that's from 'custom cable uk', and tbh for that price I might renew both, they're rather well worn, so I would expect a difference in sound across the two.
