If you were to assemble a cost-no-object portable system...

How would you build it? A few guidelines:

*Must use current production electronics. So no iRiver iHP series, etc.
*Must be truly portable, small enough to carry in a hip bag or Headroom bag and used for listening on the go. This also means that tube microphonics in items such as the TTVJ Millett Hybrid must be considered.
*Must be a complete rig. So DAP/Amp, or Transport/DAC/Amp.

Let the theorycrafting begin

So...no suggesting a full-sized rig and adding a slave or robot to carry it around with me?

I'd hire the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to follow me around for a day. I don't have to carry a thing, and the soundstage can't be beat!

Also, no wires!

Dammit, I should have included more fine print :P

iMod > amp of choice > headphones is a pretty dry and beaten path. Anyone got anything inventive?

CDP/MD players with optical out feeding external dacs?
Linux netbooks feeding USB external dacs?

Ipod->ALO LOD Harness->Lisa lll -> ?? esw10jpn? or a full sized recable? Ed8s if they end up being good, release in a month or so. I would probably go for those if cost was no object.

PS-don't know the size of a headroom hip bag, Lisa lll is not super compact but i carry it in a pocket, med hip bag or jacket easily, even the back pocket of jeans or pants with the ipod & ALO lod harness.

I'm just about to think this.
Imagine how good your portable stuffs would be with these:
imod + uber vcap + pinky cables + lisaIII + ed9.
To me, portable means you can hold it in your hands and carry around.

iMod>RAL lod>vcap box>RAL interconnect, portable b22 (halfway jk. We can make it happen somehow!), seriously though, Lisa III>R10 (balanced for portable b22 :-p), if going by Lil' Knight's rules.
You CAN lug around R10s. It'll make me cry, but you can.

EDIT:
h140>interconnect>portable dac>interconnect>Lisa III>Ultrasone Edition 8

Money no object?
...and still can be carried in a DSLR or Notebook Sling Bag

iPod 5.5G and 4G isn't exactly in production now, but still available in abundance in used market. So is iRiver H series.

I'd do this:
- iRiver H140 upgraded to Toshiba 240GB with ZIF Adapter (Total: $500.00)
- Sysconcept Glass Toslink (Premium Polished) ($100)
- Battery Powered Red Wine Audio Isabella 24V + Isabellina DAC Option + Headphone Output Stage ($6000)
- Apuresound Recabled Sony R10 ($7000.00)
- Notebook Sling Bag ($50)

Configuration:
iRiver H140 -> Rockbox -> WAV -> Optical Toslink -> RWA Isabellina DAC Stage -> RWA Isabella Preamp Stage -> Headphone Amp Stage -> Sony R10

Total: $13560.00 only

Be careful what you wish for huh?

Funny you should post. I am thinking of getting an iRiver H120 to install a 32 or 64 Gb CF card w/ Rockbox. Then using an optical feed an iBasso D10 Amp/Dac. For headphones either Yuin OK1 or Etymotic ER4S.

Not to expensive at about $1,000. It would be closer to $1,200 if I get the ER4S recabled by APureSound.

Ooo, iBasso have an Amp/Dac that accepts optical input now? Cool

How would you go about the CF-card mod? Is there a how-to about that somewhere on here?

Send HiFligth a PM he is the man for the CF mod.

EFN, to get the APureSound re-cable I am selling a kidney as well! Not really, more like wishful thinking.
