Having all their albums; they're all really good.
I'll recommend something I haven't seen anyone else has yet, "Still" is a serious gem and if you haven't heard yet you need to NOW.

Pretty Hate Machine is good, but it's pretty emo-teen-angst and I don't like it when I did when I was... well, a teenager lol
The Downward Spiral, Further Down the Spiral, Broken/Fixed, and The Fragile are all really good. The Fragile grew on me like other people mentioned, I didn't really like it at first but it's very well done.
Kinda lost interest about 4 years ago or so. Saw them live a year ago and they put on a really good show, made me dig up all of my discs and rip them and saw them in a whole new light.

I felt the same about The Downward Spiral. Listened to it about a year or half a year later and I liked it a lot more.
Again I also felt the same way before. Their new albums are really good as well.
I think Trent Reznor has a few really good releases under his belt. By far I think that The Downward Spiral is his best work. Probably the most layered and complex material he has ever written. It's also a concept album and some of the lyrical content is IMHO really genuine, heartfelt, and sincere. The production is fantastic and I think he makes some of the best sounds in music. One should listen to The Downward Spiral closely and carefully. I like Pretty Hate Machine, too. I think Trent has a great command of dynamics and songwriting. While I think he should step outside basic song structure more often the guy does know how to write songs.
Unfortunately, when he stopped doing so many drugs his writing deteriorated. I'd say The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, The Fragile, and a few of his obscure demos/experiments are the only material worth listening to. It's unfortunate that NIN went so downhill.

I think that you're being a little tough on "Pretty Hate Machine." However, I completely agree with your recommendation. OP take Chris' advice immediately!
Actually, I'm wondering if it's worth getting the new 2010 Remastered "Pretty Hate Machine" when I already have the original CD issue.
no... it's brickwalled and the bass has a bit of a bloated quality to it on the remaster
the sad thing is people who you'd think would know better are praising the remaster...
^Is the vinyl out yet?
