Another "help me choose" ~$100

I recently bought a pair of HD 280s that I'm in the process of returning. The two biggest problems I had with them were weak bass and sensitivity to even the slightest movements. For a couple years I've been using a pair of PX 100s for all my headphone needs and I absolutely love them. Comparing these two headphones side-by-side with the opening of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 I really felt the HD 280s didn't have enough bass to make the full orchestra chords sound really rich. The other problem I had was watching a full movie I found that even the most minimal movements (like breathing and heart beats) caused annoying extraneous noise and normal repositioning in my chair caused so much extra noise I would miss entire portions of dialogue.

My priorities for a replacement are, in order:
1. Sound quality: It seems the PX-100s have quite a bit more bass than average and I don't necessarily want a pair that has exactly that same balance, but the HD 280s just didn't have enough. I was wowed though by the detail the HD 280s exposed that I'd never heard before (individual voices in a capella music, the action of piano keys, etc.) and certainly don't want to sacrifice in that department.
2. Comfort: Surprisingly I found the HD 280s relatively comfortable, I didn't have a problem wearing them for entire movies. I suspect however, that there are much more comfortable headphones out there that would make me forget wearing them entirely for marathon usage session (6+ hours).
3. Noise attenuation: Some level of external noise attenuation would be a lovely bonus, but certainly not a requirement. My guess is that the problem I had with the sensitivity of the HD 280s to movement is a product of their ability to block external noise and I would rather be able to move around without distraction even at the expense of noise attenuation.

And these are the headphones I'm primarily considering at the moment, though I am open to any and all reasonable suggestions:
D1001
ATH-A700
ATH-M50
HD 555

I find it hard to believe your PX100s had more bass than the HD280, maybe the HD280 were underpowered or defective?

If you are looking for more bass and comfort, can't go wrong with the A700 from those choices.

Suggest looking at the Ultrasone HFI 550 also.

Unfortunately I haven't listened to the Denon and the ATHs but I have heard the HD555s and owned the HD595s. They're good, but I keep saying this: I liked the Alessandro MS-1s better. They're more involving.

If I'm not mistaken those are supra-aural headphones and I'm really looking for circum-aural phones, I guess I forgot to mention that earlier. My ears get bothered by anything directly on them for long periods of time.

Another to add to the list is the Fostex T50RP. Semi-open, circumaural, fairly light, comfy and good value. Pro audio gear.

The MS-1s come with pads known as comfies. They are really comfortable, also for longer periods.

Here's my criticisms:

D1001 - Supposedly good bass; may be inferior in value though because of the Creative Aurvana Live!
ATH-A700 - Weak bass, great soundstage. Mod or walk away.
ATH-M50 - ?
HD 555 - Weak bass, more detailed (I think)

My suggestion is: Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO 80ohm used from either Ebay or the FS FORUM (Got mine for $90 shipped (ONLY 80 ohm or you will be disappointed) OR: JVC HA-RX900 w/ a Cmoy/Used Total (Air/Bit)head

The reviews I read for the T50RP were very positive. At $74 shipped, I would not be surprised if it becomes a popular choice.

FWIR...

D1001 - used to sell for ~ 81 shipped but now selling for more - the Creative Aurvana Live! for under $80 shipped is probably the better deal
A700 - not a popular choice, probably for good reason
M50 - a stand out with solid bass at ~$105 shipped
HD555 - should be selling for ~ $80 shipped but instead sells closer to $100

AD700 - a stand out with light bass at ~ $105 shipped
Q40 - a popular choice at ~ $95 shipped
RX900 - lots of bang for the buck at ~ $60 shipped
T50RP - at ~ $74 shipped seems poised to become popular

I'm not sure what you mean by this, what's the relationship between these?
There are not enough differences between the D1001 and Aurvana to justify the price difference. Aurvana = better value because it sells for less, D1001 = inferior value because it sells for more

Has anyone here tried the A700 or A900? What does either sound like?

Lots of people have heard one or the other of these. You could search "A700" or "A900". I have owned the A900 and in a word I describe it's sound as pleasant. I probably would have kept it and not moved on to other headphones had I not found it too uncomfortable from my ears rubbing the inside of the ear pads.

Edit: I've since owned several other non-Audio-Technica headphones that gave me no such discomfort.

Yes, I've done some searching, but I haven't got a clear idea of whether they're regarded as good phones or not. The closed models aren't nearly as popular here as the open equivalents.

the jvc hadx1 are very detailed with tight bass. about 75$. the earpads are large with oval openings so they might touch your ears if they are big.
an a900 is very nice if u can strecth your budget. it has huge earcups.
