you would not believe me if i told you the sound stage has almost opened up to the size of the AD700 but IMHO they almost did. They beat them in every aspect other than soundstage and its still close. they need a lot of burn in though.

Everybody talks about how big the soundstage of the AD700 is. What about its imaging and instrument separation during complex passages?

Thanks.

I love my HFI-780 especially when you can get a $250 can for $170 shipped from RMC Audio if you tell them to beat Northern sound and lights price I believe it was still a higher actual price at RMC audio but because there was no shipping fee it was $10 cheaper.
I paid about $30 more from one of the dealers on Amazon. That's OK, I am in the review program there and they sent me a 46" LCD to review for free last year so I think I can spend a little extra there, lol. Should be here late this week or early next. I will compare them to my closed A700's, probably a better comparison then comparing them to the open AD700's.

Thats where they start to fail... they get congested when things get complex which is why I'm getting the ad900s to see if this problem is remedied. Still, they are fine cans nonetheless especially for the price.

really i thought the separation was as good in that aspect as it sound stage was in its aspect. that was the very first thing i noticed even before they got burned in.

Separation sounds just fine to me. Great phones.

That was also a problem for the A700 that I reviewed.

separation is fine but like any cheaper set of cans... ex 555 vs hd595, the hd595s are more composed when lots of instruments play at the same time.

I agree on the congestion thing, but it happens rarely, like when too much bass gets muddled with too much highs

Haven't had that much of a problem with congestion with my A700...I just hooked them to my LDM+ and am amazed by increase in bass and soundstage.

Congestion wasn't as much of a problem as the A700 not being able to keep up during complex passages. Instruments tend to be blurred together.

As for the soundstage, the A700 has a very spacious soundstage, but that's also its down-fall IMO since there were apparent holes in the soundstage leading to incoherency. In another word, I thought it was overly spread out.

However, for $68, the A700 isn't a bad value IMO.

Initially, I ordered the Ad700 for $68, but everyone who ordered apparently got the A700 instead.
