Hmmmm. I do believe I've bought all of my high end cans (except for one) from Headroom.

Wow Ed, that is a real commitment already. They must be really special. Well I am preparing since I just sold my extra headphone and equipment to prepare for this.

Heheh, well, I guess we'll have a mini-meet in February, hopefully then.

Headroom, can you change the ends of the stock cable for ballanced amps?

I really can't say what we're going to do until we get our hands on them. Obviously, however, we've got to find a way to provide balanced capabilities for these can, so I'm sure we'll be doing something.

Tyll,

Can you tell us how much total time you have now spent with the Sennheiser HD800?

Also, can the HD800 be driven by the Grace M902 DAC/Amp or a Max Headroom Amp, circa 1997 (which you personally sold me in fact). I noticed from photos you used the Benchmark DAC1 Pre and some fancy looking transport/CD.
Would be interesting to know just how much additional or upgraded equipment maybe needed to make the HD800 happy.

Thanks for the great tips and knowledge since 1997!

Paul

Given that the Grace m902 can drive the K1000's, should be no problem.

Although it will be interesting to hear how the HD800 sounds balanced.

ed,

what exactly does "balanced" brings to the table, in your experience?

About 20 minutes. Not much, but informed by 16 years experience evaluating headphones.

Hmm, my guess is that the HD800 should be considered moderately difficult to drive, but not far off the norm. My guess is that your amps will work just fine, but they'd be the limitation to the performance you're getting with the HD800.

In my view, and it's tentative since it's so early on, the HD800 is a headphone that will benefit by every bit of performance you throw at it. In other words, the better your source and amp, the better result you'll get. These cans are very unlikely to be the limiting factor in your headphone rig.

You're quite welcome, Paul, I look forward to remaining a valuable help in the future as well.

Tyll: I am thinking of order a pair of HD800s. (I want to and can afford it, just trying to convince myself to take the plunge.) I know that Headroom always ships FedEx. Will these be insured for $1400 for the shipping process? Also, I am trying to figure out whether to send it to my work or home. Do you know whether there is a difference?

Thanks!

Hello Shellylh & All HeadFiers,

Sennheiser HD800s will ship via fully tracked/insured FedEx Air Express. Delivering to a workplace address typically speeds up FedEx delivery as well as providing someone to sign for the package... Signature Required on all HD800 deliveries!

And at times the HD600 could knock your socks off from synergy with the DV336i, while I just felt the HD650 were good but not as special with it.
I just got a CD I ordered. Judas Priest's classic album "Painkiller", a digital remaster. It's a great recording. One of the few genuinely good ones. The HD 650's shine! I highly recommend this CD to all who appreciate a great metal album.

So it all seems to be a moving target. You tailor your equipment to make the music you like sound best for you.

How do we decide that a set of cans sound neutral? The sources sound different, so do the amps and not to mention the cans!
