Futuristic looking -- makes me think of what astronauts exploring Mars will having installed inside their helmets for listening to ambience/wind/aliens underground (through mics on the suit exterior) whilst excavating for ancient extraterrestrial civilizations... or mold.

The funny thing is, by then, these will be like crappy ipod ear buds -- audiophile sound then will obviously be nano eardrum implants -- wait no, wifi (802.11x) nano eardrum implants.

The other HD800 thread in the main headphone subforum is not really appropriate for the question so I'd like to ask it here.

There are some concerns about bass reproduction on HD800 due to ring design instead of dome. How is the bass reproduction on HD800? I'm not a fan of bass light headphones, ety's are a prime example, they aren't bad, but lack of bass totally kills them for me. I'm happy with the bass in my HD600 and 2005 DT770 consumer edition, however anything less than that will probably be a huge turn off for me. Do HD800 have good bass extension and power?

Sennheisser has been taking some pretty serious whacks at the state of the art lately (rather than relying on past achievements). They released a pretty high end line of microphones a little over a year ago and it's been getting raves all over the pro audio grapevines. The price for a pair of those is pretty close to $4k but I think that they have some even higher end offerings up their sleeves.
These kinds of products take a big commitment even from a big company and I think we're lucky that they're willing to stick their necks out this way. They're going to have to sell an awful lot of these to break even if the tales of all the R&D it took are even close to true. So if you're looking for a headphone that can really compete with an R10 or HE90, I think that $1400 is less than I might have thought a real world beater would cost.

Hey Voltron, if you're the first in the greater Bay Area to get a pair, can I have the newspaper concession for the folks that are waiting in line out of your front door?

Seriously, I'm glad that you'll be one of the first ones to post impressions on this one. You gots the gear and the ear to make some great long term listening tests.

Tyll, in your opinion, would it be a wiser choice to purchase a HD800, and upgrade the amp in a year or so; or go balanced with a pre-existing HD650, say via a Balanced Desktop.

Assuming funds exist for only one option at the moment.

I have seen several references to the (Lemmo?) connectors - any updates on possible part numbers, or even some measurements? My balanced Bijou was made with these phones in mind (purest spec), but since I don't have a SE amp, some cable modding needs to be underway, since the orders won't be all that long now...

Just curious - can you say how many preorders HeadRoom has, and any ballpark for TTVJ?

Apparently 4-conductors are used, so it probably would not be a big deal to just reterminate the stock cable. As for aftermarket cables, it's probably fair to assume people are looking into that right now.

This is good to hear. It is apparent that all of us are thinking OK early adopters pay $1400 and if we wait, we can get these things for $1000.

He must have been using some transformer box with his hot-rodded portable to be putting the Stax Omega into the mix if everything was based on that portable setup.

Compared to my Denon the O2 do have poor bass.

Not only is impact less, but with some electronic music I can hear the loss of 25Hz and lower notes with the O2, while those notes are there in their full glory with the Denon (Bella Sonus "Enamoured"). Now considering Spritzer's "O2 Mk2 port mod" with blutak again. At least that is a possible fix for the O2 deep bass, as there is no fix for my HD600.
