well I got it all sorted and calibrated The records sound good and that's on a cheap pre amp at the moment.

Now I'm going to have to decide between a couple of phono stages.

I'm tossing up between the Cambridge Audio 640P, and the Project Phonobox MKII. Which one do people like better?

Thanks

Edit: Thanks for everyone's help Would never have got my record playing working on my own

I see that Earthshaking Music has the Phono Box II listed @ $119. If all you ever want to do is run MM cartridges through your Rega then you will need no other preamp than this unit. It has a 40 db gain that will light up even the the weakest of the high output MC cartridges. Its a very nice phono preamp.

Hm they seem to be out of stock. Also, I live in Australia and the cheapest price I've found here is $225 AUD. The CA 640P is $300 AUD. which is the better deal ?

edit: the turntable is currently using an AT95E cartridge and stylus. I don't really have plans to change that at the moment.

Have you tried looking for an older 2nd hand integrated amp from NAD maybe? 2-300 dollars sounds like a lot to spend on a pre-amp. Have you looked for the TCC ones? Remember these things are small so international shipping won't be that bad unless you get hit by import tax.

hi,

Probably not interested in an integrated amp as we have a nice valve amp already. I have looked at the TCC ones but was unsure as to how they compared against something like the Cambridge 640P. The TCC would probably end up costing around $150 AUD.

Well unless you are short of space or fussed about looking at non matching vintage gear, then a lot of old integrated amps, which you can pick up cheaply, will have good phonostages and you can use them just as a phono pre-amp by running the tape outs to line ins on your other amp. The NAD ones even have Pre-out and Lab-out which by-pass all the internal switching thus minimising signal degradation.

In terms of SQ, read that link to the Italian online Hi-Fi mag TNT which I posted at the top of this thread. They rate the TCC better than a NAD PP1 which would be about equivalent to a NAD integrated. They also say it's pretty much on a par with the Pro-Ject. All this stuff is probably coming from the same Chinese factory. With the Pro-Ject / Cambridge you are just getting a slightly tweaked up European implementation in a nicer box.

In the context of a budget rig running an AT-95E you

a) won't hear a huge difference

b) are better off saving money for the cart / turntable upgrades or records you will no doubt be splurging cash on when the vinyl bug bites you.

I generally have to agree with memepool. Phono preamps make the least difference. Of all of the inexpensive phono preamps available, its really hard to beat a Hagerman Bugle. Probably the best thing to start with for someone needing a preamp quickly is to just get a TCC TC-750 and enjoy the turntable. Down the road you could order the Bugle kit and build the thing. Once you hear the Bugle, you could always put the TC-750 in a 2nd system or give it to a friend and you wont have much invested.
