I think that was the first time I was there. The second time he had his massive tube amp fired up, and I'm not sure what that was.

Man, those speakers. They didn't SEEM like they'd sound good, but they DO.

Now, I know there's a whole thread about the plastic thing here... but I'm pretty dissapointed to see them on heads. They look really cheaply constructed in photos. I'm VERY reminded of the SA5K which, while good for $300-$400, I can't imagine that construction at $1400.

Is it similar feeling to an SA5k?

Very Cool Voltron... thanks for the new pics and notes.

and Tyll and gang for letting them in...

I hope that this enjoys a nice long production run... enough for me to sell off some stuff and get a pair....

Cheers,

$1400 eh... maybe I'll just pop a pair of those new drivers into my SA5000s and be done with it...

I asked Tyll about having my stock HD800 cable re-terminated with a 4-pin balanced XLR plug, and he said "We will be working on a balanced connection cable for them. I have no idea when they will be available. I have no idea what the recables will cost."

I am still thinking in terms of re-terminating the cable, not buying a whole new cable. Certainly not thinking of buying a $1400 cable for a $1400 headphone (don't ask why I have a $300 cable for a $300 headphone).

I've written up a list of links to first impressions/reviews here in my head-fi blog for everyone's convenience.

seriously doubt the frame of the SA5000 will hold the drivers and even more doubt your ability to score a pair of the drivers from Senn

There is no reason why a local DIYer could not cut off the 1/4 inch plug and terminate balanced. The aftermarket cables will only be slightly more expensive to accommodate the cost of the lemo connectors. There is absolutely no reason that I can think of that the cable for an HD 800 would be any more expensive than any other recable. 650 connectors are $27 from parts connection the lemos should not be much more and are far better.

He used a balanced to single ended adapter hooked to the balanced RA-1, which was simply 2 RA-1's built into one chassis.
I assume that he used the same components with you.
I could be wrong, but if my memory serves me right, that was his equipment.

I believe it was a 508.24 player. He also demo'd his speakers for me, which was a 6 foot tall speaker box with 30-40 RS-1 drivers built into them.
Wouldn't that really be dual-mono setup, instead of a balanced push-pull design?

I don't know which is worse that there are 56 pages already, or that I've read every one. From those who've heard the phones, soundstage comes up again and again as one of the outstanding features. I'm a sucker for soundstage which is why my headphone of choice has been the GS1000's. I bought them under Headroom's return policy. I was just going to try them out, see what all the hubub was about. That cavernous soundstage, those seductive mids. What "return" policy. Can anyone whose heard the HD800s compare them to recollections of the GS1000, especially in terms of soundstage (width, depth, spatial size). Please don't tell me it surpasses the GS1000. I don't want to have to "try" out the HD800s.

The HD800 has the least personality imposition of the upper tier that I have heard, this is a good thing they serve up the music as it is without adding it's own salt and pepper.

The Senns strong points to me were dynamics, transparency, speed good extension and absolutely beautiful midrange. I really wish I was in a better financial place to order a pair of these as I think they are a great bargain at the MSRP. Once these hit the street and are partnered with better amps the reviews will be very positive IMHO. They are going to require a rock solid powerful amp to get them to thier best. When we compared the 650 to the 800 the 650 seemed easier to drive but not by alot that the 800. In a direct comparison I felt the 800 left the 650 in the dust.
I wonder if the availability of a top tier headphone in current production will have any impact on the out production headphones that sometimes get a pass on their faults because they are revered.
Since you own the K-1000s. How would you say they compare?

Some of us _only_ have balanced equiptment, so some retermination is required. Most logically, I'll reterminate one of my existing aftermarket cables, and NOT mess with the stock. I have actually ordered a replacement stock as well to reterminate balanced.

Got two laying around already^^
^^ CLAD35 is 4 connector - CLAD27 is the two connector.

I assume plenty of people will choose to reterminate existing Senn cables with the new Lemo connectors. BUT, the new cable is substantial and seems less in need of change than the 600/650 cables.
