The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review - Page 51

Ed,

You mentioned HD800's bass is on par with HD650 which is NOT light weight by any measure. In fact I read some people here complain too much of bass of HD650!

How do you compare HD800's bass with electrostats, say 007, HE60/90 ?

BTW, great impression you have there. The part you mentioned that HD800 is free of the 'echoy' thing in Qualia is a BIG relief for me. By looking at the construction, I've been a little worried about HD800 suffer the same flaw.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I have to say that, Sennheiser has a LOT to prove to me with these phones to justify that price tag. That is a huge jump up from their top of the line HD650s.

Seems to me HD800 is not an upgrade of HD6x0, rather a new line of ultra high-end cans.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sennheiser release a true successor of 650, HD700 or something, priced around $600.

Given the price tag of $1400, I don't think HD800 can reach 1/10 of HD650's sale volume.

You really ought to download the high res pictures. To me, the fit and finish seems MILES better than the K701 and SA5000. These look like toys in comparison. Of course, it may not look as good in person, but still...

The K701 is "drop-dead gorgeous"?

I hope you hear better than you see, heh!

A little payback for all the "informal tech transfer" heading the other way in the '60s and '70s perhaps?

I hope APS Audio (Alex) or Moon Audio makes something more affordable.

Those who pre-ordered these headphones should just pray that the stock cable is good enough.

This is getting incredible ridicolous, or there is something I do not understand, maybe both . One thing is the price for their cable, but how can they know that the cable will do good for the senns, if they haven't heard them. It could go both ways, couldn't it?

James Serdechny from Stefan AudioArt is a former Sennheiser employee. Maybe Sennheiser is working with him together, so maybe it was already finished and made available to James Serdechny for research.
I've no facts to this matter, so it is pure speculation

PT Barnum is rolling in his grave for not getting into Hi End audio!!

It's a new cable, so they introduced a new price. I don't think it will be that expensive from our favourite Head-Fi cable makers.
