My other hobby is digital SLRs and every nine months when a new model comes out everyone jumps on the bandwagon and says its the greatest thing and the BEST SLR ever invented, but in just a short time later they are referred to as mediocre or crap. I noticed headphones and audio equipment seem to be more immune to these type of comments since the product lines seem to refresh longer, but I didn't know if this is the case here. I'm not trying to be rude or disrespectful, just want to make sure the 'newness' isn't influencing people's opinions.
well one of the 3 reviews posted hasn't been all too positive. he said that the HD800 was very close to the HD650 and except for the noticeable improvement in the soundstage, it was difficult to pinpoint the other differences (ie they were very subtle).

But when is the HD 850 coming out? The 800's are so yesterday.

It's kind of interesting how there wasn't this much of a brouhaha when UE8s were released with a nearly identical price. Obviously, people are used to UE9 costing a fortune, so maybe they're conditioned to that kind of price announcement from Ultrasone, but not to Sennheiser. But given the scope of Senn's ambition, which seems nothing less than to recapture the high-end of the head-fi, the MSRP doesn't seem all too surprising. From what little we know of both UE8 and HD800, it seems that the kind of technical innovation and effort that has gone into HD800 R&D are not any less than what has gone into the development of UE8, if not more.

I also see a lot of people drinking the hatorade when it comes to the HD800's looks. I'm not too keen on the looks, either, but I don't see any reason to denounce them based on their aesthetic only. Given that the R10s will often make the user look like a wooden Princess Leia, there's still no disputing that they're quality phones worthy of their status. K1000s look like the unabomber built it in his cabin... the point being: the proof is in the pudding, which is only the music it reproduces. Most of us won't be able to hear this thing until spring, so let's ease off of hasty judgments and speculations.

Seems to me like they did their Homework. The Ultrasones sold well, the 7's and 9's. The HD650 is an Excellent phone. This is not the HD650 Upgrade folks. This is a new Tier for Sennheiser. You don't take out your Crown Victoria, and tell all your Crown Vic customers they have to start buying Lincoln Continentals. There will be a 680 or whatever. To hit this price point, there has to be REAL change, they did that in Spades. The 650 will be a hard act to follow, SQ wise. It looks like they made EVERY effort to make a serious advance here. It also looks like they are listening to this board and what we like.

Bravo Sennheiser!!

Even if you are a Grado Fan or an Ultrasone Fan, or an AKG fan, you should LOVE trhis!!

Competition and BUZZ makes them all work harder and make better product. Let's see, maybe Ultrasone will have to make a new Driver!! maybe Denon will have to make a new Driver.

This is 100% all new R&D!!

Now light up that APPLAUSE SIGN!!

AND THE FANS GO WILD.....

I couldn't find the not-so-positive review - could you please link me to it?

Time to save! This one looks good, innovation, detachable cable etc! I guess the doughnut tec will pass down to 700 or something, and heating up that market as well. Wish there are more reviews, a bit strange no headphone amp is used on the demo.

Actually you can get a pretty considerable 'stat rig for well under $1400.

Maybe not an O2 and an amp, but at least an sr-404 and an amp. brand new. And hundreds of dollars left over in case you wanted a better amp.

He/she is referring to this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/ano...ession-399245/

Personally I do not find it be a not-so-positive review at all, quite the contrary. It's just not as gushing as the two provided by Jude and Tyll.
Thanks, Subtle. I prefer less gushing.

You're welcome and me too.

The gushing made me take out my wallet, but Bostonears' review allowed me to thankfully put it back.

I couldn't help it and pre-ordered from headroom earlier today

It is like when going to a movie, expecting it to be fantastic, and it usually ends up as sort of a disappointment. And often the opposite happens when I do not have any expectations at all.

I find the above linked review to be very positive. I love the HD650's, and from what I read, the HD800's looks really, really promising.
