There are enough of those kind of people to make this thing worthwhile.
As was pointed out earlier in this thread, many people here have several headphones that already add up to beyond the value of the HD800s and as these HD800s are supposed to be the end all be all, if they really are, there is no reason not to sell all of your old cans to get the money for the HD800. $1400 is a decent chunk of money, but it certainly isn't unattainable.

If someone has an HD650, K701, and SR325i sitting around they already have more than half the money for the HD800, and those are just common example headphones.

When I raved about the unveiling to the wife, instead of, "Your're nuts - forget it!", I got, "Ah-ha (shrug her shoulders) get it then!"

Mmmmm... I think she has gotten used to the W5000...

Its not just you!
As a start you could become a Contributing Member, as is cost $$$ to have up-to-date servers and bandwidth.

Is it indeed all made by hand?

I assume it to be hand assembled, not entirely handcrafted in that there is someone in Germany hand fabricating the drivers, etc.
