suppose your right. didnt think i'd ever own any stax gear either. unfortunately, since the lambdas were my first good headphone, I'm afraid of the cost of improvement. lol..

lots of system gear to upgrade first though. so I'll be safe a while.

isn't that what custard said on his last stand?
Yes. Without a doubt, Custard was discussing upgraditis immediately before the last stand.

Right, you said nothing of the sort that they would be like the 600s.

Exactly, to me the HD800 is a 'new' market for sennheiser, its aim is the buyers of qualia, denon 7000, ultrasone edition 9, rs 10... for those few who don't consider money as an obstacle or simply want the best. For example I think its equivalent in the AKG range would be the akg 1000 and not the 701.

I mean that HD650 is a high end headphone but it doesn't enter the dream heaphone category.

So I, too, feel that during the upcoming months we'll see HD680/700... which may become the equivalent of the 600/650 series at amore pallateable price.

In short the consumer target of the HD800 is different of the one for the 600/650 series.

I wonder what Custer would think of this? Did he even like to eat custard?

Kinda like Ultrasone adding the Edition 8 to replace the Edition 9, but still adding a Pro 900 to live between the Pro 750 and Edition models.

Isn't it really more of a "return" to the high end for Sennheiser? I mean, Senn has made some decent headphones in the past...

I for one would be impressed if the HD800 would best the Sony R10! I doubt it, especially considering they are two very different headphones; one closed, the other open. But, pssst, listen up folks, even if it is not an R10 beater, how about if everyone says the HD800 is better than the R10 and maybe it will piss Sony off enough that they will get back to the drawing board? Deal?

Either way, more new models = more choices for us

I think you meant Edition 7 rather than Edition 8. The 9 replaced the 7. The 8 is a new product which serves a completely different market.

Betcha a six pack of fresh Belgian beer they do. They are a bit harder to drive though.
I don't like the R10 that much so I'll pitch in another 6'er that the HD800 will top them.

What I don't like: the pads are the type that collects dead skin and dust

Another thing I noticed is that the drivers are angled like the Sony R10:

Looks like they have it connected directly to a Benchmark Dac 1 - I was interested in this as a good dac/amp combo, and it seems to be seen quite often with Senn's - any thoughts?

I'm the type of person that wants to get the hd800 but also want a cheaper new model for throwaraound use that has sound similar to them to use everywhere and should be simple to power... sort of like what senn did with the 555/595 models but much better this time... maybe a 300 dollar model. Now that would be some juicy market competitive shyte that will kill the other manufacturers top end cans for good.
Sennheiser needs to learn how to lay out products like video card manufacturers. Top of the line followed by crappier versions of the same tech at lower and lower price points. The first step down often is as good or still better than the previous best and cheaper than the previous best ever was.
