Well, I would fall into this group although I haven't said anything negative about them. $1400 is a lot of money, and while I do have it available, I still need to take a long pause before I decide for sure. This is why I'm waiting for the reviews to come in after the first batch ships.

Right now, I'm looking at ways to save money and put it towards the 800, as well as deciding what gear of mine I can sell. Tax refund time is also around the corner. I guess I'm trying to find a way to pay for these without using the cash I have on hand now.

A good point for sure. For me however, it's simply time to move on to a new reference phone. I have no complaints about the JVC's, I'm just ready for a new experience is all.

I have been waiting for a new Senn HP for so long (as has everyone) that I just know that I need to own these (how could they be bad? hah!). But you raise a very good question, maybe I wait until getting some listening time with the HD800 until I let the (increasing value) DX1000's go.

I also have the wife to think about (wife walks in, looks at me, sees new headphones she doesn't recognize, asks if they are new, then "HOW MUCH WERE THOSE?")

Anyways, I do have some nice backups just in case the HD800's simply don't mesh well with my source equipment.

Even for hard-rock music ?

Ah ha! Here's my main problem... I have yet to formulate an answer to this question that doesn't make me stutter, blush, or duck. Fourteen hundred just doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as four hundred.

You are the one making the purchasing decision. He just said what he heard. There is no audio disciple that should be looked up to for guidance. You should take a chance or hear and decide for yourself.

Are you saying that after the Grado GS1000's he doesn't have a reputation??

Placed an order with TTVJ. Might seem like an irrational move to many, I guess, but I'm hedging my bets, especially after reading Jason from Stereophile writing about them in glowing terms... he really knows classical music, writes music criticism for a paper in SF, I think, and program notes for the Lincoln Center sometimes. There are too many trustworthy opinions by people from different venues - not only head-fi - for the HD800s to be a total hoax, for those who seem to believe all the hype about HD800s are foam. Hype is hype, for sure, but some of it are likely justified, by all accounts.

The last time I bought a stereo equipment unheard was when I jumped on an opportunity to get my turntable. Came up spades. We'll see. All's well that ends well.

The only review I will ever need is Tyll's. While I agree that Jason knows his music, the conversation I had with him regarding headphones at the last RMAF was less than promising.

That's not to be debbie downer, or anything. I imagine they're exactly as good as Tyll says they are, which may well make them the best. Can't know for sure until you hear them, but the fastest way to do that is to buy them.

Hey now--my Grado GS-1000 remains one of my two most used full-sized headphones, the other being my Sennheiser HD650. In fact, the liveliness of my GS-1000 had me wanting a little more shine from my HD650, so I picked up a Moon Audio Silver Dragon cable for the HD650.

As for my reputation: Mustn't I have one first to lose it?

Seriously, though, I can only speak for myself, based on what I hear, and whether or not what I hear appeals to me. I really liked what I heard from the HD800 at CES 2009, plain and simple. You may not, and this I understand--I can't force any of you to hear it as I do.

However, unless something supremely tragic happens between CES 2009 and the actual deliveries--like every one of their deft-touched HD800 assembly techs quitting at once, leaving only ham-fisted replacements like me--I feel very confident far more people who hear it will agree with me than not.

tushay - but Todd the vinyl junkie also raved about the GS-1000s and pretty much all the reviews on them were glowing... of course the reviewers always used a high end system to plug them into.

I bought mine when they first came out just because it was a Grado, and I still have them while the many other headphones that I owned at the time have been sold.

The new Grado GS-1000s are a statement option which now belong on the short list up there on the top...

the K1000's sound great when not compared to anything else. But, side by side with the GS1000, hands down I prefer the sound of the Grado

These headphones are for the minority who want to hear everything that’s on a CD, especially for recording engineers, musicians, reviewers, music students, and for those audiophiles who would own the very best.
These are just a few - so my point is that they are amazing headphones for some and not for others. I imagine that the HD800s will be the same - except they might be "polite" enough to appeal to a larger group like the HD650s were. I like peppers and hot sauce, thick coffee and imported beer - if you KWIM?

Wait until I hear them. Then I'll give you the 'truth'. I agree that there is no audio disciple, but there is an audio God. Not to name names or anything...

I'm confused with all of this talk about the GS1000 hype.

Wasn't that all built from impressions based on the prototypes, which have been said to be quite awesome?

I think the level of sales would been practically the same regardless of comments, just because so many of us have been asking for exactly this. That the initial results are favorable is a plus.
