The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review - Page 73

Tyll is right. Sennheiser is letting the HD800 speak for itself, which is different than a lot of what Sony does

Sure, their press release / brochure is a bit "this is the new sliced bread," but overall, we've been riding the hype on impressions made by people unrelated to Sennheiser

I can't wait to be around when it's actually released!

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Sennheiser HD 650 Headphones
Sennheiser HD-600
Sennheiser HD 800 Headphones

[QUOTE=les_garten;5271643]Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some would say that Grado's look just like the Cans used at the Nuremberg Trial. Herman Goering looked very Stylish in those babies right before he chomped down on that Vial of Cyanide. Click on this link and scroll down and tell me those ain't HP-0's!

Hermann Goering

If you look closely at the cyanide vial it has a little tiny warning label on it "May contain traces of peanut "

The fact that enthusiasts are all so intimately connected on-line ... allows the hobby to effectively develop and communicated what becomes common knowledge within the community, and therefor drive its consumption (market) behavior.

What is making/will make these headphones so successful upon introduction is that A) they really are very good, and 2) enthusiasts know it when they see it and can communicate it world-wide almost instantly.
I think, especially in this instance, the internet is more akin to a feedback loop of hype. Let's not kid ourselves. Who are the most vocal proponents of Sennheiser's new $1400 toy? The guy selling them and a Sennheiser rep (also trying to sell them). The price isn't going down! Buy now - it's a limited supply!

I'm not suggesting that the HD800s necessarily do not meet the expectations set within these forums, nor that Tyll is being disingenuous. No one except a scarce few know how the HD800 sounds, and of course, opinion is subjective. But there is something a bit unsettling, although not unexpected nor unprecedented, about the way this is playing out. It is naive to believe there is no marketing going on here.

Cant say that anymore. What has there been, a couple thousand posts since this threads inception alone across 10 different threads all about the same product? Nope, no hype here . Not to mention the actual shipping date is still what, 4-6 weeks away? I'd call that substantial hype.

Meanwhile a tumbleweed blows through the Ultrasone E8 thread every so often.

There's a difference between Hype and Buzz. You are referring to Buzz.

Not unsettling to those with more than 10 posts - things a little s.l.o.w. over there at Ultrasone?

Yes, oh shallow one, the number of posts you have determine the wisdom of your words. Seriously, am I back in highschool or something? BTW, how's the kool-aid taste? I'm so wet behind the ears, nobody's passed it to me yet.

There really isnt a difference except for the fact that Buzz is usually created out of thin air. In this situation we have a physical product, impressive specs, flashy marketing add, and a handful of glowing first impressions including the OPs who, very dramatically and well worded, claimed that the HD800 could very well be the best thing ever. All of this combined to create a very large number of threads and a couple thousand posts in a matter of days. Not hype you say? If thats not hype i dont know what is.

Well yes, I may be a whorfrat for HR, I think they do an excellent job. They are the ones that really helped me get deep into this hobby.

After further review, TTVJ and Moon both have 30 day return policies as well. So as to my original point, if you have the money, it's a very low risk proposition giving these a shot from one of these vendors. That's the kind of opportunity I'm looking for if I'm going to shell out $1400 on a headphone I haven't heard. Although, I really don't think mine are going to become B-stock. Sorry Lil Knight.

There has been a lot of talk about Sennheiser making a mistake usign the DAC1. Actually seems really smart to me. Get some really well known and respected head-fiers and vendors, get them to listen to the 800's on what is just an ok headamp, let them see how good they sound on that, than all of the, well if it sounded that good on that, how is it going to sound on my Zana, Extreme, or much more importantly my Raptor.

I just hope i like them as much as i like my DX1000s. Every time i put on my HD-650s i just shake my head and take them off after a couple of minutes. It will be nice if the HD800s give my an open headphone alternative to the 1000s.

Oh, don't be a hatah! You won't ruin this parade anyway.

Who'd of thunk it - a public accountant from the mean streets of Dallas calling me a "hatah." Well, at least you've acknowledged that this is a parade.

More like a block party - sorry you aren't having any fun.

Agreed - just edited my Ignore List.

BTW, has anyone heard anything on the Lemo connectors?
