Out of Print Alert -- The Last Chance Thread

I am starting this thread as a space where Head-Fiers can alert fellow members of CDs or LPs that are going out of print. This way people who are interested can snag them while they are still available at a fair price.

Let me get it started....

Judy Garland - The Very Best of Judy Garland: The Capital Recordings 1955-1965



This 3 CD boxed set is from EMI Gold. While the packaging might make it seem as though this is some cheesy compilation nothing could be further from the thruth. The following albums are presented in their entirety on these discs: Miss Show Business, Judy, Alone, and Judy in Love.

Furthermore, the first three albums were mastered from the original stereo session tapes, and Judy in Love was mastered from the original mono session tape. I have all of these albums on original Capitol records vinyl pressings, and these CDs sound just as good, with less noise, and for a lot less money. Sets are still available on eBay for about $12 to $15.

This music has never sounded better. If you like Judy Garland then I strongly suggest that you get this while you can.

^ The best way I know is ask your local record store owner - they can tell you. That is how I got the warning on Nada Surf's The Weight is a Gift. Often, when the label no longer has them available, that is the time to ask.

Amazon.com will list the item as having been discontinued by the label. They are usually pretty good about updating their database.

If a title on Amazon has recently been changed to discontinued then you can usually still find it reasonably priced at your local store or on eBay. That is how I found about about the Judy Garland boxed set listed above. It has been on my wish list for a few years and I just never got around to it. I was reviewing my wish list and saw the set was discontinued and found it a few minutes later on eBay for a very reasonable $12.

Do you just randomly notice that an album is going out of print, or is there some way to search for out of print?

I usually stumble onto them when I review and update my wish lists. I have several hundred CD and vinyl titles in my Amazon.com and Acoustic Sounds wish lists respectively and go through them monthly.

I carve it up into high and low priority buys. My goal is to make sure that I don't miss a high priority title before it goes out of print. It's already happened to me a few times and was very aggravating to loose out on some important releases because I waited too long to pull the trigger.

Here's one...Chet Baker's Chet SACD by Analogue Productions.

It's recently gone out of production on SACD, though it's still widely available in redbook format. It's worth chasing down in the SACD format if you're a fan...the last time I was at Wadia they were using it for demonstrations. One of the best sounding SACD's I've heard, though limitations of the source tape will be evident.
