Computer World says "Back to the future: Vinyl record sales double in '08, CDs down - What's old is new again when it comes to audio storage" (click link to read the article) - in 2008, 1.88 million vinyl albums were purchased, more than in any other year since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking LP sales in 1991...

This is my first 8 hours of my portapros impression (on a intercity bus, in less than ideal environment for an open can). First thing that stands out: separation of a song's different...

Fantastic sound (compared to the other wireless headphones and normal headphones) although, for me, positioning is very hard to get right, but once right the sound is full and crisp,...

Another Head-Fier here helped me get a pair of these from the Koss outlet store recently. On day one I didn't like them at all. Had this very weird and unbalanced sound signature. When using...

9.2.12, I received a very small USPS package with my supposedly "new in open box" TF10's. The box, actually, was still sealed, and was from the Amazon Black Friday sale. For a brand new...

Little background, I’m a home theater guy who likes listening to music on his Tannoy’s with a Denon receiver I consider warm. When I upgraded to the Tannoy’s I almost went insane watching...

And CD sales were 362.6 million. Downloads were 65.8 million units (probably individual songs, not albums). I read that for at least one label, download sales exceeded CD sales in revenue last year.
Vinyl is a marginal, fringe segment of the market. It will never be mainstream again.

not so fast, scompton - vinyl was never as mass-marketed as other formats, including books (which are under a similar transformative pressure from networked media), and consider that the vaunted long tail is one thing, commoditizing mp3s is another: quality will come back as a differentiating factor not just in marketing, but in formats.
of course music labels continue to compete with iTunes, but hopefully without ever bringing back DRM...

Before CDs existed LPs were mass marketed. Not Amazon style mass marketing, because that didn't exist back then. But I encountered big box LP stores long before I encountered a big box book store and I was a member of at least 3 record clubs.
Those links you provided don't mention vinyl, they're all about digital and on demand CDRs. I've bought a few on demand CDRs before and I'd buy digital if it was lossless, but I won't buy it compressed unless I have no other choice. On demand CDRs have been around for quite a few years. Arkivmusic.com's business model is based on it. Hopefully, Amazon's shop will have stuff that's never made it to CD.
The link in your OP says that LP sales were the highest since 91 when Nielsen started tracking them. The problem is that by 91, LP sales had already collapsed. They were regulated to the back corner of a store, if they carried them at all.
I can't find actual numbers but I did find one article that states that CDs out sold LPs in 88. Digital Audio Essentials: A ... - Google Book Search This jives with my experience. I went on a 3 month vacation in the winter of 87-88. Before I left, the majority of the space in music stores were LPs and they sold a few CDs. When I came back, most of my favorite stores had converted to selling CDs in long boxes. It was an unbelievable transformation in just a couple of months and very noticeable for me because I had been out of music stores for those 3 months.
