Interesting...So, I've been listening to metal since the late 70's when i was in middle school-doh! Wasn't called metal then.
I've heard me a schiit (check that spelling people) load of heavy arse rock music and all of the albums on the list. Can't say I dislike any of them. Very difficult given a massive amount of considered music.
I will put my neck on the chopping block and say, that I never got the Rein In Blood thing. But, maybe because back in the day I was more into Metallica (up to And Justice for All) Antrhax more so than Slayer. I thought Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss was thheir best listen. Rein In Blood is a really good album, but it was never like jaw dropping awesome to me. Ok-yes it fore ran death metal and maybe was a game changer. For me-meh? Before you scream sacrilege-burn the witch! In the 80's (probably before you were born
- I was all about thrash-it is probably the kind of metal that most defined my tates into my early 20's.
And, I really like Baroness' blue album, and I love stoner doom and Sleep's Holey Mountain is awesome but how these two bands deserve to be in the top 20 metal of ALL TIME over a slew of others, really is debatable. Is Seep any better than YOB or Dopethrone era Electric Wizard? Maybe they were more trend setters....I can't say.
That said, I think it makes sense that Opeth and At the Gates made the list-they definitely influenced genres of music as much as Sleep. But, I agree with them, because I really like those two styles of metal! How about Kyuss or Neurosis or Isis?
Totally subjective and fun to think about all the great hard rock and metal out there....
long live rock and roll
