All I will say is that for me, it was a disappointment. The album meanders a lot and what results is very unfocused effort with not a lot of repeat value. YMMV.

I was going to review it but it got lost in the shuffle (it was honestly just bad timing).

I spun it again this morning and I totally agree, it never completed any ideas.  But...it does get points (for me) for being the first attempt I've heard of combining sludge/death with black/post atmospherics. Kind of like Horseback, some neat ideas that just don't get there

A least Baroness, Tool and Opeth made it. Too much grandpa Metal for me though. I'm not a huge fan of lists saturated with like...4 bands.

Metal is personal. Well if a list helps a 10 year-old get the albums and learn about em ......then I guess that's a good use. There really is no definitive list maybe? Maybe it's a mainstream metal list. If anything it reminds me of some albums that need a playing................................................like Reign In Blood !

Interesting...So, I've been listening to metal since the late 70's when i was in middle school-doh! Wasn't called metal then.

I've heard me a schiit (check that spelling people) load of heavy arse rock music and all of the albums on the list. Can't say I dislike any of them. Very difficult given a massive amount of considered music.

I will put my neck on the chopping block and say, that I never got the Rein In Blood thing. But, maybe because back in the day I was more into Metallica (up to And Justice for All) Antrhax more so than Slayer. I thought Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss was thheir best listen.  Rein In Blood is a really good album, but it was never like jaw dropping awesome to me. Ok-yes it fore ran death metal and maybe was a game changer. For me-meh? Before you scream sacrilege-burn the witch! In the 80's (probably before you were bornwink_face.gif- I was all about thrash-it is probably the kind of metal that most defined my tates into my early 20's.

And, I really like Baroness' blue album, and I love stoner doom and Sleep's Holey Mountain is awesome but how these two bands deserve to be in the top 20 metal of ALL TIME over a slew of others, really is debatable. Is Seep any better than YOB or Dopethrone era Electric Wizard? Maybe they were more trend setters....I can't say.

That said, I think it makes sense that Opeth and At the Gates made the list-they definitely influenced genres of music as much as Sleep. But, I agree with them, because I really like those two styles of metal! How about Kyuss or Neurosis or Isis?

Totally subjective and fun to think about all the great hard rock and metal out there....

long live rock and roll

Mark, no I completely understand. Hopefully through this thread and hopefully a few recommendations up on Metal-Fi, you will get into some new stuff.

To prove it, try this on for size. Let me know!

Thanks for the reccomendations! I think I'm liking Gwynbleidd the most.

I find it a little funny how determined this guy is to deflect this label off of his latest music. Nevertheless, it is a marvelous album.

totally subjective.  i was born in the 70's and cut my metal teeth on later 80's stuff (master of puppets, seasons in the abyss, etc) but honestly with metal above all other genres, it doesn't seem to influence my tastes as far as what i "used to" be in to and what i listen to now...i totally dig the new tech death / black stuff coming out now as much as i still spin Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood (or even maiden or priest, as i get older ;)

lists are fun for a lot of reasons (i love lists) but should never be taken seriously...it's other peoples subjective opinions that created them after all. some albums are simply classics no matter what someones opinion may be about them, whether they deserve historical credit or simply are freaking great albums for a huge amount of people.

that said,  i will happily go on record saying that Slayer f***ing rules and the "unholy trinity" is some of my favourite music of any genre ever recorded

IMO Master of Puppets is the most overrated album of all time. As a Metallica fan I've just never been able to get into it, and I honestly cannot understand why so many people love it. Anyone else feel this way?
