Iron Maiden.  Start with Number Of The Beast, and more forward.  NOTB is the first album with Bruce Dickinson as the singer, once you get up through Fear Of The Dark, then I'd recommend going back to the first two albums (Iron Maiden and Killers), they're more "punk" than the Dickinson era, they might not be your cup of tea, which is why I recommend starting with the Dickinson stuff.

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys and Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II.  Like Iron Maiden, but more epic feeling.

Man-O-War - Louder Than Hell

Demons And Wizards - Demons And Wizards

Rhapsody - Legendary Tales

This is what I did with Maiden, not intentionally, just happened to be what was available at the time in store, it is a good way to go. although Phantom of the opera will always be my favourite Maiden song.

Basically I'm looking for music similar to this song:

I'm already familiar with Opeth in general and I'm not looking for Opeth-like bands as such.

I guess it's the organ and a certain Pink Floyd-ish vibe I get from this song that appeals to me. I'd be grateful for any suggestions :)

Edit: I don't listen to much power (anymore), but Trogdor's suggestion is an old favourite album of mine.

A couple of suggestions for William007:

Edguy - Out of Control. Their older albums are more traditional power than the newer ones, Vain Glory Opera might be a good starting point. This features guest vocals by Hansi from Blind Guardian.

Blind Guardian - Into the Storm (from their "classic" album Nightfall in Middle-Earth)

Ayreon - Journey on the Waves of Time (the line-up isn't constant and this is their only powerish album)

Check out Pan.Thy.Monium.

Ronnie. James. Dio. Legendary for a reason. Holy Diver and The Last in Line are essential. I'd also look into the album Rising by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. It predates power metal as a whole, but it's one of the greatest heavy metal albums ever made.

Of course, if you want something more modern, Dragonforce is delicious cheese. I used to be on the anti-DF bandwagon, but I came to appreciate how comically over the top (and talented) they are.

EDIT: Sorry about the double post. I just figured out the multi quote option, so I'll use that next time.

After a long pause I decided to revisit Amorphis and listened to Skyforger from 2009. Must say I like the album.

Amorphis - Skyforger (clean vocals)

Amorphis - Majestic Beast (clean+growling)

Neurosis - Honour Found in Decay. What did you guys think? I'm running through the tracks right now, so I'll reserve judgement until I finish.

For those black metal fans, I REALLY REALLY suggest you listen to the new Bosse-de-Nage record (Bandcamp):

My review is here.

My review is here.

This has all the ingredients and potential to hit me like a train full of awesome but for some reason I'm not connecting. The vocals are very off-putting. I like the drums and bass though. Vocals sound a bit whiney and over-acted. Is that a word? Over-acted? Like he's trying too hard to sound desperate. Desperately trying to sound genuinely desperate.

I think I am reaching an age where I keep comparing new music to the stuff I grew up on. The basic ingredients that shaped my taste in music. There are ground rules there. Principles. I need to recognise some of them or I move on. Nice try though bub.

Well....some have reacted similar to you with respect to the vocals...as per the review! (hint: read it)

But I think a few more spins, Negakinu, you will be a convert. Seriously, "The God Ennui" is gorgeous. These guys are seriously talented.

This is really the "Roads to Judah" release of 2012.

By the way, Sandy and hurricanes are very metal. In fact they are very black metal. I have been without power now for a few days. It sucks, I am able to post here when my phone gets recharged.

I've read the review! Hence I started listening to the album since you sounded so convincing. Will give it more spins. :)

Good luck with that hurricane business. Take some photos of the debris. Who knows, might come in handy for some artwork. ;) No seriously, good to hear you're just without power and not without limbs.

Yea, it does suck. I was out of power for a month when Katrina hit. You'll make it through.

I concur. I believe I posted a few tracks a while back, but they're definitely one of the tightest and musically interesting "black" metal bands right now. It took a while to get used to the vocals, but I think once you start to realize how... Weird and abstract their lyrical matter is, I honestly can't think of any other vocals to fit it.

And their drummer is nuts. Deseutude is my favorite because of him, with God Ennui as the album epic.

These guys actually had a split with deaf heaven recently (sported my roads to Judah T shirt today, actually, heh) but I've yet to hear it. There's also a pic of one of BdN guitarists sporting a deaf heaven shirt! Bay Area bands gotta stick together! wink.gif
