Anathema makes some quality music, but it's just not mindless enough for the mainstream.

The new Shining is upon us:

Review will be up hopefully by next week when the album officially comes out (most of it is on the Tubes).

just picked up the new menace ruine, always been a fan but this one i think is their best.  haunting but more cohesive than the last outing.  the lyrics are better too, and some cool use of instrumentation.  not specifically metal but i can't imagine what other genre something so evil could be a part of...

Holy cow this new Between the Buried and Me CD has got to be there best cd yet...it sounds a ton less random then anything else they have put out...i can actually see myself listening to this one quite a bit

How can you say Btbam sound random? making an album that flows seamlessly for over an hour is not something that can be achieved by being random...
That being said, I'm just glad to see a post about a good band in this thread for once.

But I think Weather Systems was one of the catchiest releases this year. Melodic, Atmospheric, straightforward with a nice flow throughout the entire album. I think it is more to do with promotions, marketing and TV/Radio visibility.

I think there have been a lot of good posts about lots of good bands.

@Soup: And I thought you didn't *listen* to BTBAM? They are a great band, always have been. I met Tommy Rogers at a show, nice guy.

The only reason I stated underrated was in-fact the music is beautiful, accessible and the subject matter is subdued but the band is still somewhat underground. It is catchy but maybe melancholy. A band I need to give more attention to.

Before you buy it try listening to it through someone. What I find melancholic, many people don't.?

Katatonia Gems, which you might have missed. Bonus and EP tracks which have not featured in standard album releases:

Unfurl and Dissolving Bonds are some of the best stuff Katatonia has ever written!
