Katatonia, will always be one of my favorite bands of all time.

However, I don't really like the first two cds. Especially, because I was never deeply into growling vocals doom. I am not saying I hate them either

From Discouraged Ones to Dead End Kings (Dethroned and Uncrowned), there are no growling vocals. Something to do with Jonas Renske.

From the third CD Katatonia does, what no body else has been able to do or copy. Its unique, it flirts with multiple genres but still remains fukin awesome.

Just listen to Dead End Kings and Dethroned and Uncrowned (Acoustic Remix album of Dead End Kings). People who can do that deserve my total respect. Its the same set of songs but the treatment of each song is different and it results in two quite unique albums.

Also, I feel they structure an album really well. Songs have a flow and you will tend to get through a complete album without getting bored(that kind of thing).

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I love Immortal. But, his publicist needs to tell him to spend a couple of months in the gym before dressing up in the bat cave.

Just feeling obnoxious on a Saturday morning. Seriously though, their visual aesthetic has always sidetracked me from the brilliance of their music.

I remember buying At the Heart of Winter-my first still favorite Immortal album and loving the music. Then, looking through the liner notes seeing the photos and thinking is this some kind of a joke?! Maybe that was the point. Musicians that didn't take themselves too seriously even if the music was all metal all the time.

Seriously though, just because he took off his shirt and playing live doesn't mean he should be having six packs abs .I think that idea is wrong. So so wrong !! I am serious, when I say I believe that this is what metal stands for. I don't think there is any joke. It is what it is, whatever you are seeing, plain and simple.

My thoughts, No offense meant!!!

I agree that the CD booklet for 2002s Sons Of Northern Darkness was strange but common. What do you want from them? Oiled up homos like Manowar?biggrin.gif

The time when you realize Immortal are cool just the way they are is when your completely Metal. They are not from Hollywood, they are from Norway. They might not exercise and they drink beer? They are what they are.

Still real Black Metal is not part of the world, it's it's own world unto it's self. It's not a popularity contest and it's not at all about good looks.

OK-I was being an XXXhole...on purpose:veryevil:

Just say the devil in me...we are talking black metal.

Actually, I think I read in Lords of Chaos that they wanted to separate themselves from the extracurricular activities of Mayhem. Maybe there way of saying, don't take us too seriously...we're not stabbing each other or burning churches or anything...just playing metal.

Still...I think some of the appeal of BM is the atmosphere-that includes visual aesthetic-like a good horror movie that almost has you believing the tales of devilry and those photos always just had me scratching me head.

I would never say they are anything other than metal...actually a favorite band of mine.

But honestly, their photo shoots beg for a little playful ribbing.  No six pack necessary.....remember Danzig back in the day?

Ya, I remember hearing in different interviews, the guys saying, yep .....they (Dead, Burzum ) were crazy, and didn't want any part of it other than play the music.

I remember seeing Danzig at Depp's Viper Room in West Hollywood. The bartender scooped up my change forcefully when I tried to retrieve it. Lol

Things you don't forget.
