But that won't ever stop me from complaining about the quality of the production, because I want the music to sound even better than it does through better production. I think that you are conflating the two issues of good music and good sound quality. Both of which are discussed on this website due to it being an audiophile forum. Getting mad that we talk about sound quality in addition to music quality won't get you anywhere.

And tech death doesn't have to sound like garbage just look at both the last two Origin CDs, both are in the DR8 range and sound freaking fantastic while also being excellent music. And while I haven't heard(or even heard of) all the music you listed, listing a few examples of metal that sounds good, doesn't discount the fact that most metal production is anywhere from bad to truely horrid. You're typical DR6 metal cd that comes out these days sounds servicable sure, but that's probably only becuase we've become accustomed to it, heck, I get excited as long as there isn't clipping. But that doesn't mean that it can't sound waaaaayyy better. Just look at that Swano mastered Torture Devision EP that Trogdor already brought up. There are some excellent sounding metal records but they are the exception rather than the rule which what we are trying to change.

Well said Soups, well said...

Speaking of that Torture Division EP Swano did, I need to listen to that thing some more...

haha its all good dude, I don't expect everyone to like Origin, I just happen to think they make some of the best Tech Death out there, specially on Antithesis. And I'm pretty stoked to hear their new record when it comes out this year. But then again, I also LOVE Labyrinth by Fleshgod Apocalype, easily my favorite CD by them...Another horrible sounding CD that I love is Vanitas by Anaal Nathrakh, which is probably one of the worst sounding CDs out there :/

And just because I love music like this, everyone keeps asking me if I take drugs.
I don't.

Best study music ever btw.

Oh man, you didn't like Vanitas? I mean, not my favorite, but I thought it worked for itself. Constellation of the Black Widow is my favorite of theirs but I thought Vanitas was pretty decent.

I've seriously been on a -gaze and post- kick lately. Giant Squid, Lantlos, SubRosa, gimme gimme.

You're right on going into that section and starting arguments. I don't do that either. I'm in here to talk about good music, and good music is good music regardless of what iTunes spits out on a results sheet.

I totally understand what you are saying. A lot of this audiophool stuff is purely for gloating about how much money you have. But when we talk about an album SOUNDING bad (this is not including the musicality) we are talking about the production and mastering. The best band could release their greatest material ever but if it is produced/mastered badly (Rick Rubin) then  it would detract from the awesomeness.

Two of my all-time favorite bands are Falloch and Alcest but I don't know if you mind clean vocals :P

Both absolutely incredible tracks IMO.

I don't like DR compression. All the dynamics get crushed -- that's sort of the point? Well, no, it isn't but that's what happens. I used to use a software-based dynamic compressor for playback, well before the Loudness Wars were in the public eye, until I realized that the punch was gone, destroyed by the compression. What's the point of a lull followed by crash when the lull is jammed up to the VU redline?

I like my old skool NWOBHM. I like my thrash and my groove. I like my operatic and my gothic. I like my industrial and my neue deutsche harte. Yes, I even like Lordi. smily_headphones1.gif

But I'm not too fond of (some of) the more recent stuff. It's... well, it's a response to the Loudness Wars. Accent and syncopation and dynamic range don't matter much when every beat is an up beat and notes come so fast that it's the audible equivalent of a blur. Not for me.

YUP

Now you gotta find somtin else for me to hear!:p

Guess you don't know who is playing bass and drums on the record?

Jeff Loomis (guitars)
Keith Merrow (Demisery) (guitars)
Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) (bass)
Alex Rüdinger (The Faceless, Ordinance) (drums)

Makes it a modern day metal super-group. Like YES, or ELP.
