Lets Talk Metal

In the beginning they were like a screamo meets visual kai style, now apparently it's more gothic j-rock with metal elements?  I only ever heard a few songs off their first album.

They have some good stuff but I don't like it all. I do like how they incorporate a lot of different sounds from screamo-goth-death-thrash-electronic-theatrical among others. Talented artists for sure

I have a soft spot for some goth and symphonic metal. Just picked up the new Tristania. Three vocalists with a mix of styles....melodic dark rockish vocals to some DM. A little heavier than their last release which much more mellow and  was basically a goth rock album with a bigger emphais on female vocals. I thought it was done well done even thought it moved to rock terrain.

This album is a return to metal, but still very melodic with a return to some extreme vox. I miss the really gorgoeus voice of...oooh, I'm going to have look her up-Vibeke Stene and male bariton Osten Bergoy. With another dude doing the DM vox.

Sorry this is way off topic for everyone else. But, I think Piper is an acquired taste. I like it, but w/o Gilmour, it's basically a different band. Very much an older 60's sound and psychedelic. Think Jefferson Airplane meet the Zombies and toss in some weirdness. But, it's cool in its own way.

Yea, I have the album in my library, but I haven't given it a full chance. I have all their albums actually. Saucerful of Secrets is pretty cool too, and that was the last album Syd was on. I think Dave came in on that album, but he didn't quite hone in on his sound at that point. He was there more to help cover for Syd.

Cinema Show is my favourite. The drums are so amazing!

Ohh!!now we are talking Prog.. What about Gentle Giant, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Anglagard, Camel, Mike Oldfield. When Opeth - Heritage was released I had gotten pretty deep into Prog..

I could never get into Genesis' proggier side, or any "pure" prog for that matter. The 80's and 90's albums are where it's at, great hard rock with some prog mixed in.

Oh I sure love myself some good 'ol prog :)
King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Mike Oldfield and Camel are pretty much my favorites.

Does anybody else think that Mike Oldfields Tubular bells got worse and worse over the years? I listened to the 2005 version a few days ago and clicked it away after like five minutes. Horrible. Loaded with cheesy techno and electro stuff that just sounds wrong in this song.

More Genesis greatness!

A lot of good taste in here. I knew you guys were dynamic.

Some bands I see that I might have to dive deeper into.

Edit: I'd definitely add Jethro Tull to the list. Band is raw, bluesy, progressive sweetness.

Next up for me is Atomic Heart Mother and the Wall-an old favorite. And, then on to some King Crimson and Moody Blues.

Nice. I'm guessing you already have Wish You Were Here, huh? I haven't heard any Moody Blues, but I'll check them out... King Crimson is a household name for Prog rockers.
