Would anyone recommend a single recording as the best place to start?

Depends on how much you like prog. Deconstruction is my favorite, but it's insanity from start to finish. Same with Synchestra. Addicted and Terria are both easier listens.

Call of Cthulu, One, Battery, Master of Puppets etc

And you know what? I really really like their S&M album.
Everyone, feel free to punch me.

I like S&M. I didn't know it was bad !!!

Anyone checked out Sadhaka's album this year? The band is composed of one of the dudes from Fauna and some other artists... Atmospheric Black Metal from Cascadia. Sounds pretty awesome from what I've heard. Check it out.

Everyone's recommendations are good.

But honestly, if you are going to start with DTP, start with Accelerated Evolution. That's really the gateway drug. Then maybe Z2, then Decon.

I haven't heard much Devin Townsend either(Only SYL)... I started with Ghost... These are the images I get, when I listen to Ghost; Sunlight on a rainy day, Greenery, Rainbow, Dew Drops, Laughing babies, friendly carnivores lions roaming on the street !!!!!

I still get a kick out of this. The first Metallica I ever heard. A tape trader copy of a copy owed by my super cool metal girlfriend way back in 85.

Ghost is one of my favorites, but obviously it's completely different from everything else he has written. Not sure if I would recommend it to someone trying to get into his metal stuff.

Ghost is beautiful. I actually like Ki is even better. But I wouldn't recommend either as their first DTP albums. Don't you think that would give them the wrong impression? You listened to SYL so listening to the other extreme makes perfect sense! :-)

I am on the path of discovery... I sometime feel, DT is a little complex and requires more concentration/time so that you can truly appreciate their songs.

Yup, really isn't your ordinary no-brain Metal shred fest.

Re: The DT recs have been all over the map! SYL sounds like a logical starting point after reading the tea leaves. What is clear is that there is strong emotional attachment to this artist. Strong opinions = personal investment in this man's music and its impact. That's a pretty strong endorsement. Probably like asking baby boomers which is the best Dylan album.

The new Haken album is really worth checking out.
These folks really know how to play varied Prog Metal!
The vocalist sure knows how to impress. Pretty unique voice.
