Not exactly cookie-cutter, but I think a lot of prog metal vocalists sound like they're trying way too hard, and PW unfortunately falls into that category. And whoa, I hadn't heard that!

Well, I bought and am listening (CD) to the much raved about New Altar of Plagues. Still processing.....For some reason I thought it was a complete departure from metal....all electronic. That's not really accurate-Don't play it for your hippie dippie indie folk music friends!

I think I was expecting something more like Enigma which would make no sense whasover!

I would put it solidly in sort of extreme/blackened experiemental metal with more electronic influence and less post rock. Different, yet still very much AOP. I need some time for it to fester....

IMO, definitely one of this year's best releases.

Very different, but also very good as it's own entity.  I'm still processing this one as well, but so far so good... It's a similar scenerio to what Blut Aus Nord once did.

Is anyone digging this album as much as I am? Incredible stuff.

Speaking of Dimmu Borgir, this dudes don't re-invent the wheel, but still put out some solid material if you ask me ;)

Indeed. It's a shame that their most recent offering looks to be a ... massive departure from their renowned style.

Yeah-I'm not sure about this one. Then again, I did NOT like Opeth's Heritage until about a year later. I think I need to get my hands on the lyrics. My first impression is-interesting....good even but not as rewarding as their past work or for that matter the new CUL. CUL for me is a great combination of challenging metal that also mesmerizing and has an emotional pay off. I feel similar to Deathspell Omega. I like them; enjoy the intellectual thought put into their lyrics and packaging, but at the same time the idea of the music is more interesting to me than the way it sounds. I feel the same way about Salome. I like all these kind of avante guard bands. But, at the end of the day-the music has to hold its own rather than be a "cool idea"......just not sure yet.
