I'm wondering if I can get recommendations based off of bands like Nachtmystium.  Just heard them yesterday and they blew my mind

I'm soft when it comes to bm, so if someone could help ease me into it from this angle

Nachtmystium are pretty great, what album(s) did you hear/like?

THIS is great:

That's how I like my Black Metal :)

Too bad it got really silent around this band.

:o

I did not know they were working on a new album!
Visions was sooooo good. The titletrack gets a 9/10 :)

Glad I'm not alone! Yup, they've been releasing small teasers for months now. Aquarius is easily in my top 5 albums, but both of them are masterpieces.

Listening to the new Evan Brewer album now... it's, uh, different. I think he may have collaborated with the spirit of Frank Zappa on this one.

I don't now if you'd classify this as metal, but Skillet's new album is pure awesomeness. My favorite song is Rise, gives me the chills biggrin.gif

I remember I did listen to 'Keep On Rotting in the Free World' quite a bit when it was on the old Earache sampler back in the day though wink.gif

I wasn't into em in their "big" years either. Truly maybe they were something when their albums first came out. They get a lot of respect for being prime originators of many of the sub genres we have today. I listen to them once in a while I wonder at times though if maybe their back catalogue didn't age as well as other extreme bands from the time. I think Morbid Angel aged better.

I will be excited to hear what they are up to. Their last two albums were really different I guess because they had nowhere else to go but slow down. Maybe they burned out a little. They were like the fastest and most technical grinders.

There is just so much great metal coming out this year. I think it's going to be hard even for legends like Carcass to rise above as the scale is so much higher now.

Carcass's last albums didn't have a repeated playability for me anyway. I loved em at first but then they actually became simplistic. Take this years Deads Of Flesh, Immolation or Suffcation releases and play em everyday. They are so complex and detailed that you can never figure em out or get tired of em.

One of the true great songs of all time. I can't stop listening to it. To think that they were planing on blowing up the cathedral on the cover makes it even more scary.biggrin.gif

@Redcarmoose: agreed, especially on Morbid Angel aging better. I still turn on Domination sometimes and it rocks as much now as it did when I heard it for the first time. Although I get the sneaking suspicion that this last Ilud Idiocy or whatever it's called won't age quite so well wink.gif

Ok, so if you like their style on that album, more or less the psychedelic influences, I'd recommend checking out Sigh's Imaginary Soundscape, Oranssi Pazuzu's Kosmonument, and Hail Spirit Noir's Pneuma - all similar, but still very different.  If you think you may like something atmospheric (aka ambient, depressive, some folk influence, etc.) let me suggest some of my favorites: Woe, Agalloch, Fen, Woods of Desolation, Summoning, Drudkh, Alcest, and Walknut.  That should get you started. cool.gif

Good suggestions! +1 for Assassins:Black Meddle Pt. 1"-very cool stuff.

Speaking of Sigh and a bit off topic......I liked Sigh's 2012 release-Somniphobia-wierd and experimental, but pretty aewsome if you want something totally from left field-like a bizarre nightmare. If you haven't heard Sigh, reserach before you buy....it's hard to describe-but I'll try....black and deathish vocals/mostly black, NWOBHM 80 guitar sounds, movie soundtracks, carnavelesque sounds, proggy sensiblities with an almost cartoonish vibe. The first time  you hear it, you will think it's a joke, a satire. For all I know, it may be.

If you have heard Arcturus, Stolen Babies and the very awesome Unexpect, you're in the right ball park.

Genre title: uh.....Avante Garde Extreme Metal? Weird Schiit for metal heads!

Somewhat of an acquired taste....but I get bored with the traditional fare and need to mix it up.

I love this kind of stange metal:
