Harman Kardon HD 990 anyone?

Some few months ago, in the 840C thread below, I pointed about the new Harman Kardon HD 990.

At that point, the CDP had only been announced and there was scarce information about it, with the exception of the fact that it had similar functionality to the 840C, in the sense that it has digital inputs and balanced outputs. Seems information is still scarce as the unit is only being made available in Europe, but there is something more intriguing about it now...

Harman Kardon HD 990 Flyer

...apparently, the DAC/SRC/processor is very similar to the 840C, in the sense that it uses two AD1955 chips and a Black Fin processor.

On the other hand... it costs significantly less. The street price seems to hover around 350EUR now. I asked my local dealer for a unit, but he says it's been on backorder for a month now.

Anyone managed to get their hands on one of them?

Seems the CDP is not even available yet at most retailers. I was able to find the website you listed... as well as a single entry for Germany [I used www.idealo.de].

Maybe too early for the CDP to be in-stock?

And not even a single review I was able to find apart from the product announcements.

Looks interesting. "Real-Time Linear Smoothing (RLS-III)" doesn't sound too appealing to me though.

Supposed to be a switchable feature. Anyway... if anyone is to take a hit for the team, it might as well be me. Hope it comes in by the end of January.

I might even have a 840C in for comparison... we'll see.

So I was promised delivery mid-February... let's see.

What really got me going is the chip configuration... they use 2 x AD1955 with a BlackFin DSP and [apparently] a discrete output stage.

Can't wait!

So it arrived at my dealers. Picking it up end of this week.

Any interest for a review and internal shots?

It is in... you won't believe the mess today.

Apparently, there were 11 orders in for the player, and it had been on back order for 2 months, so the dealer got only 2 units in. I still can't believe the nasty looks of other customers when I walked away with mine.

Anyway... what can I say already?

Looks very nicely built. Not very audiophile by all means [no half inch front panels if that makes your fancy] but very nicely built.

Mechanism is completely silent in operation. TOC is being read within a second, so no waiting once you put the media in. I dislike the stock feet [if you can call them that!] so I put in a prompt order for a set of Vibrapod cones.

Photos to come later on in the week.

Now... I am off to attack it with the screwdriver - any idea how not to mess up the warranty sticker?

Is this available in the US?

InSides I left you a private message a week ago and a query on your board; I guess you haven't checked either?
