Ipod + Headroom Total Airhead

I am thinking of buying a total airhead amp to use with my ipod nano. I dont want to use the headphone jack on the ipod and was looking at this cable iPod Docking Connector to 3.5mm(1/8")Stereo Audio Cable. Do I also need a DAC with this or will it work going straight into the airhead?

you will be using the internal dac in the ipod, you should be all set with that cable

as tpc41 said, youll be using the ipod's dac and will be all set to go right into the airhead for your amplification with that cable.

Cheers,

If it will still be using the ipods dac then is there any reason to not use the headphone jack on the ipod?

You will be bypassing the amplification stage in the ipod and sending a line level input into the airhead. This will avoid double amping. The only way to get digital output from an ipod is the wadia itransport.

Will there be a noticable difference in sound quality by doing this vs just connecting the airhead to the headphone jack?

Yes. You will be bypassing the cheap, sub-par sounding amp in the nano, and just using a line level signal, causing the nano to act as a transport and a D/A converter, without internal amplification.

Will the ipod with the airhead sound better than just the ipod if I'm using nuforce ne-7m phones? Or will it only make a difference with higher impedence headphones?

This thread interests me. I'm considering eventually getting a mobile amp for my iPod and Shure SCL4s.

There should be a very noticeable improvement in SQ in using a LOD and external amp, no matter what headphones you use.

I have just received my Airhead today and I have noticed the difference with my AKG K171 MK2...They have an increased soundstage and that is without the LOD that will be coming shortly...
