The MMA thread (Affliction, UFC, DREAM, Strikeforce, etc.) - Page 19

It might be a pain for anyone to strike with Nick Diaz. He looks awkward but is effective- squares up all the time and throws arm punches. Somehow most of them land and cost damage.

You never see him load up on big shots but the cumulation of strikes does take its toll. He gets hit a lot but never stops coming forward. What do you do with him?

K J Noons is technically a better boxer but was beaten convincingly by Diaz in their second fight.

Yeah, Nick hasn't exactly been known to be anti-cannabis. wink.gif

Yep, pair that with a great chin and you get a quite effective fighter. Add BJJ to that and you have a pretty versatile fighter. Thing with Nick Diaz is, that all the while he is a master at getting people to come to him, to fight his fight, he's not really that good at adapting and going with the flow. When someone like Condit does what he did, you won't be seeing Nick Diaz trying to chase him or cut him off or anything. He'll just come forward at his own pace, trying to get the other fighter to stay put. It works well against fighters that fall victims to their pride and ego, but will never work with fighters that are not falling for it. Nick's one of those very dangerous fighters out there none the less - you just don't want to end up in a brawl with him, you'd just lose.

I think Diaz did try to cut the ring (cage I mean) off all the time.but failed. Not only that, he ated a few one-twos from Condit on the way out. He had success in taking Condit down towards the end which made me wonder why he didn't try more of that or other tactics earlier. Like you said, Diaz is just not someone who is good at adapting.

The problem is that it's not the easiest thing to just cut someone off. Strikers usually fight in a ring and are used to cutting people off in the ring. When they suddenly fight in a cage -- be it an octagon, yamma pit or a hexagon -- it's just not as easy.

Nick seems to be a one trick pony, and that doesn't go so far these days in the UFC which is why Condit just avoided the one thing he does well, corner and overwhelm.

I would rather see Nick and GSP fight. I have no doubt that GSP would destroy him. GSP is very well rounded.

And yes, Stockton is pretty horrible. I was being sarcastic tongue.gif

I'll put my mortgage on JDS.

That's a tough call, Boxer vs. Kickboxer, both excellent strikers, heavy hitters. I was actually surprised how fast JDS knocked out Cain Velasquez. I really thought Cain would be able to take that one, it was almost like Cain didn't train or wasn't prepared for that fight.

No matter who wins, it'll most definitely be a exciting fight.

The only way Overeem can win is to get an early KO.  It will be exciting for as long as it lasts.

I'm also looking forward to it. The two arguably best strikers in the HW division. Unless someone does anything unexpected, it won't go the distance.

I don't know. Supposedly JDS has a ground game, but I don't know good it is, so there might be a chance that Overeem could submit JDS. As for his cardio, it's always been a bit questionable, but since moving the HW it's become a bit better. He can also take a punch better nowadays as evidenced in K-1 than he could when he was a LHW. It's been common knowledge that this had to do with the weight cutting, but I'm not convinced yet. However, I am a big Overeem nuthugger (don't take me the wrong way, JDS is one of my favs too which is why this fight is win/win for me) so I think I'll root for Overeem in this one.

Don't forget that Cain had come back from an injury.  I like both fighters but Cain didn't look the same from his previous fights.

Hey, you guys ever see the movie Warrior?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1291584/

Not a bad movie, made me laugh a couple times at their rendition of the UFC, but fully watchable and enjoyable.

I haven't but might have to look at that one though. I saw a movie with Kimbo, Sapp, Carano and others yesterday: Blood and Bone.

It sucked.

UFC 144 had some great fights on the main card.  Plenty of exciting fights, exciting finishes and savage knockouts.
