hello all, im no expert in this matter and am looking for some advice. i have equation rp 21 headphones which need a portable amp to be driven by my ipod. i finally decided it was time to get a decent pair of headphones and now i am looking for the cheapest amp i can get without sacrificing too much quality. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, I thought that the RP21's were one of those "cheap" (for head-fi standards), closed, and nice sounding headphones that are recommended when people wanted to go unamped.

If I were you, I would see if you are happy unamped... way more portable and convenient. I have a Hornet and a Corda 2Move and I always end up just using an Ipod + Kilpsch X10 when I am going portable.

cheapest i have seen was something i think called boostaroo revolution on amazon for $30 i think but those must be horrid quality i am assuming? im really not looking to spend a lot. maybe the rp 21s deserve a lot more though and if im not ready to cough up the hundreds of dollars for an amp i should just return them... i dont know.

Boostaroo is horrible, it would better to use Ipod + RP21 in my opinion. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could make a cmoy. You could also buy a used cmoy but I am not sure how much it would help with those cans (since I have not heard them).

yeah they are one of the "cheap" ones at $99 but i have only read rave reviews on them claiming they are comparable to headphones at least twice the price, i dont know.... the rp 21s un amped with an ipod sounds horrid as war. sound is distored and muffled. on one track the lyrics didnt even play.

Are you sure your pair (or your ipod) is not broken? I don't think a headphone amp will fix what you are talking about.

Oh, and sorry, I didn't really mean to call them cheap... they are supposed to be really good and I have been curious about them for some time. Sorry, I can't help you anymore since I haven't actually heard a pair before. I am just going on what I have been told.

The rp21s have been fine driven right out of an ipod / laptop for me. The lyrics not even playing sounds pretty bad, maybe something else is the matter?

Is the cable connected all the way in on the headphone side? The jack is different because there's some sort of locking mechanism via the shake of the chamber + the shape of the jack- if not matched, the cable might not be all the way in.

no the ipod is new out of the box and i tested it with both my pair and my brothers he has the same headphones as well. BUT what you just said about the cord not being in all the way makes me very curious. i pushed it in with considerable force but i never heard a "click" i will go and see to this right away!

Been listening to the RP21's with beyer leather pads out of an ipod with a line out to a FiiO E5 and really enjoy the way these phones pair with the E5, listened to the E3 as well but the E5 is just better... cheap setup for a bass head who doesnt want to sacrafice decent mid and high range in my opinion.
