The O2 (Mk1) is the grown-up version of the 001, and has a similar tonality though it is better in just about every way. The 404 has a rather different midrange presentation with more emphasis on upper midrange, and if you want a 001-like sound it's not the way to go.

Following on the posts on the previous page about building a system. Thats exactly what I did I wanted a SRM-323A + SR-404, and read on te internet what kind of system to combine it with. So I got a system with a nice smooth sound, stronger low-mids (english hump) and some mellow mid-highs and highs. Yesterday my stax system finally arrived, and they have been on now for 12hours continiously. I'm not sure if stax require burn-in (probably they do), but I definetly know about the charging from my other stax system. I LOVE the sound, its exactly what I hoped/wanted, definetly a good investment. I cannot comment on how the 323 and 404 sound, just on how they sound on MY system, and they just sound unbelievable, they really make my music shine, god I love stax

Indeed. In the current for sale is an O2mk1 at more than 1000$ more than the 404 also for sale. If I bent my wallet for such a gorgeous beast, what kind of amp would I pair it with to get that grownup 'baby stax' sound?

I would suggest pairing it with the SRM-717. Or a Blue Hawaii of course.

AFAIK the 303 and 404 are the same except for the cable, and they sound almost identical. So I would suggest also a source which slightly surpresses the mid-high hump of these headphones. I'm a NAD man myself, I just love their sound, and they seem to really be a good match with my stax'. Also carefull DAC matching is essential. As always all imo and ymmv.

Hmmm. Dont know the going rate for a used srm-717 but the Blue Hawaii is about as far away from my price range as the real Hawaii is from me physically. I notice that the 717 outputs 450v. Do the O2s (or for that matter, the 404s) benefit significantly from that?

Thanx for the suggestion to check out the Canjam 08 impressions thread. That would benefit me too.

The extra output voltage is nice but it is nearly meaningless as a benchmark to compare the amps against each other.

At this point I am considering an "interim" system, a used 3050II. Ive made an inquiry about it. There may be an issue about shipping outside the US.

I have a question a little off topic from the thread about buying. I offered to buy a 404 from someone on headfi, but it is well into the third day since I made the offer and I've had no reply. I assume that this releases me from any obligation and that I can go ahead with something else if I wish. Is there any custom or convention about this.

It's a very fair question. The whole offer/acceptance thing here on the FS boards is pretty loose. But for your own peace of mind, you might just want to send a polite PM saying that you are no longer interested.

I'm fairly sure the recent 404 you're thinking of is sold.

Anyway, I'm just skimming this thread and see that you're fairly enthusiastic about Stax, so I'd say just aim for the O2 right now. It's inevitable at this point. You'll get the O2 within the next year whether you like it or not It's the way things work around here.
