Mid-Indiana Meet - March 21, 2009 (Noon - 5pm) - Page 7

Its too bad Hardwired can't make it, I always like hearing his Edition 9. I guess it is kinda a long drive for him though. I'm really anxious to hear the Denon AH-D7000.

Does anyone have a balanced to SE adapter? (2 male XLR to female 1/4") Because if not the only thing that we could plug into the beta is my balanced hd650's.

I'll be likely bringing a balanced female XLR to male 1/8" built by the guy who is coming with me, but that doesn't sound like it'll do the trick without some adapters.

Great that I can use that. I'll see if I can dig this up anyway.

What do we think about power in the room? I have some desktop power conditioners and such, but they're a pain to move. I assume that we'll be using a lot of outlets. I could bring a couple standard APC power strips or something.

The room is a classroom. Each row of desks has about 4 outlets on it, and there's probably 8 rows of desks, plus wall mounted outlets. I'd still bring power strips though. I'll have one, but others should also bring some.

Great, sounds like there should be a good number of receptacles, but everyone having enough outlets for whatever they bring would be ideal if we assume 1 or 2 receptacles for a single individual.

I hope you're not having to pay for power consumption! I think we'll be using a fair amount!

Nope. Luckily there wasn't any fee for reserving the classroom. I suppose I pay for it with my tuition.

I guess my head-fi subscriptions don't like to make it into my email anymore... strange

Anyway... I have an adapter. It's dual male xlr to single female 1/4 in. stereo jack. I had it at the last meet if you recall.

As far as sound quality goes though, you'll only be feeding off half the balanced signal. That means gain will be cut in half, and any common-mode noise will be present on the output. If the amp is well built there shouldn't be any noise problems tho.

Only a week away

Just finished woopin' a tune up on one channel of the dynamite and couldn't resist hooking it up for a listen (SE) before installing it in the chassis. I am very impressed. I am stoked now to finish this so you guys can have a listen. It will have both SE and balanced input and output.

HC, I have never seen a pair of 701's, much less tinkered with them, so I'm afraid all I can do is supply the cable and maybe some soldering skills. Maybe we can find a tip or two on just patching into the good portion of the remaining cable that Rover didn't get

I have the parts to make some SE to balanced adapters and recable some of my cans, but the clock is ticking and I'm afraid I may not get around to it.

Sorry like I said my email isnt getting my subscriptions sent to it.

I'll be there. I really wish I could bring the facewoofer but it would be insanely diffucult to transport. (edit) nvm I see now that the time frame is noon to five, which is perfect. I'll be shooting for noon-1pm. Just wanted to make sure I didn't straggle in late like last time

Edit: Oh ya...sorry to hear about the k701's. I always enjoy hearing them. As previously stated, lots of us have DIY experience if you need them repaired (myself included). I've taken my k701's apart quite a few times if you want a free recabling job. However the safest, and probably the best solution is probably to reterminate the stock cable at the break, then fabricate or buy a headphone extention cable as to avoid potential damage to the drivers.

Edit2: Really glad to see some more DIYers at this meet. Can't wait to see what you guys have whipped up.

Hah, bad timing is key.. one of the voltage regulators on my y1 has failed, and the DAC board is now not being very nice. I've got chips on order, should be here monday, and hopefully it'll get fixed alright, otherwise I'll have to settle for a BantamCableDAC. :/

I will be bringing a "full configuration" gamma1, finished it a month ago. I haven't listened to it that much but initially it sounded at least as good as the 0404. I don't have an optical cable but I think some of the others are bringing spares.

sweet!...

i'm really excited about this meet...the amp list is ridiculous...

i just got the Denons, so they will only have maybe 150 or so hours on 'em...

the Icon Mobile did survive it's "bus flight" and should make it there intact...

^5 hours will fly by fast. But it will be good to leave knowing we can get together again soon, and with different stuff.
HF'ers(and audio nuts in general) really are the best.

EDIT:Lisening to some Bob James/Restless on the other half of the Dynamite now. Bass makes me smile. Should be assembling the amp today and PS tomorrow.
