2005-06 DT880 Vs DT990 OPinions?

Thread Starter
Looking for Headfiers opinions of the two flagship Beyers. Not talking about Pro versions, nor '03, simply the two current models, 250ohm versions.

I have read plenty and like always there are plenty of contradictions, so I thought starting a new thread focussing on the current models might help me to get better information regarding the two cans' virtues and flaws.

I have read that the DT990 is now more controlled in the bass area and that mids are not as recessed as a result. The sounstage of the DT990 is supposedly the larger of the two and highs are well extended. It seems regarded more musical and also more laid back.

The DT880 is reported as having less bass, but more controlled again, dryer sounding, more detail focussed and still with a reasonably wide sound stage and excellent highs. Both can be sibilant at times?

I get the impression the DT880 is similar to a K701 and the DT990 is a hybrid DT880/DT770 pro.

Please give me your impressions, particularly those that have experienced both.

The DT880's are more flat, with sweet, darker midrange. Their bass isn't bumped and better defined, not so boomy and empty inside like in the DT990's. The worst thing about the DT990's is the treble, far exaggerrated and sibilating with not the best SS amps. A dark sounding tube could be a good match but I haven't experienced it personally.
