For portability, the Cowon iAudio7 is good. I use it for jogging.

 

Its very compact, plays FLAC and most formats, has EQ and Jeteffect enhancements and very long battery life. No software needed, just drag and drop to a mass storage device. Only problem is the small 16gb space for FLAC and touch buttons (personally not a fan)
