Interesting thread. Can the DX1 be opened up for modding?

Finally, someone with a pic of the DX1. Looks very nice as far as I'm concerned and I am seriously considering either the DX1 or the DX3 once I get back from China.

<- owns the RX700 and the RX900

Can anyone take a pic of the DX3 if they have it? I'd really like to see a real pic of it. Still got two months before I get back to the States.

I am not sure how to open these phones up, the cushions have a plastic ring holding them in place. It may be possible to pry this loose but since these are new I am not willing to try that right now for fear of damaging the phones. Hopefully someone else may know more about this.

These phones are very solid and sound great amped, they also handle EQing very well. I say this based on my experience using the default soundcard that was in my computer and my Ipod Touch 2G as original sources (the bass was very minimal) as compared to the new Auzentech X-FiForte 7.1 which I am now using to listen to these.

I also find them to not be fatiguing and pretty comfortable as well as pretty solidly built. I hear some creaking from the case but is less than most of the headphones I have tried.

If anyone figures out how to open these safely and can find a way to enhance the bass I might be willing to mod these b ut otherwise I am quite happy with them the way they are.

Thanks for the followup. I like being able to carry my amp and iPod in an on-the-belt camera bag (geek that I am), so anything more than a portable amp is too much. But I am coming around to the brighter sound offered by these phones. Certainly well suited to a lot of the music I listen to.

The NuForce Icon Mobile might be a goodoption for a portable Amp plus it can be used a DAC with your PC. I hear it is bright as a DAC but can't say if that is the case as an AMP.

So I have been using these phones for the past week or so and have to say I like them quite a bit. The midrange is excellent as is the treble, the bass responds to EQ but is still a bit more neutral than I like but the details and the rest of the sound certainly makes up for it. These are very nice phones for 1970's rock, classical music, and most New Age / New Jazz music I have.

BUt I do have some issues, the closed nature of these is more than I was hoping for in that they block outside sound to much and I am getting in trouble for not being able to hear my family.

I actually think I may have to flip these and go a different direction. I am leaning seriously towards going with AD700 phones and just using them at my computer to overcome the looseness factor in terms of how they fit. I also thought the AD700 phones had better bass response than these which would be a bonus.

Does anyone else have a suggestion for an open phone with the same midrange and highs quality of these phones but better bass? Just to let you know what I have tried, HD555 (did not like the midrange and thought the bass was poor), HD595 (better all round phone than the 555 but still like the midrange and treble of the DX-1 and actually thought while boomier it did not have as good a bass as the AD700). For a price range no more than $200 new or used.
